What's the best way for an aspiring computer game developer to start creating games?
Assuming they have a technical background with some programming experience.
A platformer or TBS game. They're not very difficult to make technically, and they have lots of fans. They could also hone their skills and get noticed by making mods for open-source video games. Quake, Battle for Wesnoth, etc. Maybe they could end up like the people who made "Overdose". They were just some guys who made a mod for a game called "Painkiller", and it was so good that the company that made the game contacted them and published their mod as a stand-alone expansion, and now they're a legitimate company.
Choose a platform and then start your project. It is important to use cross platform language and framework if you wish to target multiple operating systems. You have to connect multiple pieces like - audio, graphics and multiple other items together in a game. Make sure you find some graphics framework in say - python or C++ to start from. It'll be easy to learn if you have some foundation upon which you can build.
