I think it's a two-edged sword.  On the one hand social media are a great way to keep in touch with old friends and colleagues who have fallen off the radar.  On the other hand, there's such a thing as too much information.  Many of us I think have heard of examples of postings on Facebook, etc., coming back to haunt the poster.  It's a lot easier to post than it is to un-post.

Personally, I don't use Facebook.  I prefer Linked In.  And when I feel the urge to be narcissistic (which I'm sure is secretly behind a lot of people's postings), I generally try to lie down until the urge goes away.

Facebook is a disease, lol. The original idea was genius allowing a college campus to meet and greet so easily online. The possibilities were vast providing a convenient medium for friendship and assistance on school work. Then it got big and it turned into a giant life sucking beast, so to speak. I'll go ahead and list my dislikes.

-I've heard news stories of people getting robbed because they posted about when and how long they would be away on vacation.
-Pictures I never wanted to see.
-I Don't really care if you took a shower and are now sitting down to watch glee and eat Tots.
-Why can't I delete my profile? I can take it offline, but it's still there.
-I don't want to help you in your games. When you achieve a battle or grow a plant every 3 minutes I don't want to hear about it.
-I no longer need to leave my house to stalk you ALL day. That's just stupid.

People have clearly gotten carried away with it. The soaring smartphone usage has made it even worse. A summary of your day is all I think is necessary, maybe check on important updates of friends periodically. The issue is that everyone overdoes it posting every move they make. I'm walking to the fridge, now I've got some tea, yay House M.D. and tea. I love technology and the internet, but we as a whole need to take a step back and say wow we're brainwashed.
