How do you make laptop batteries last longer?

I am a teacher.  I have to store my laptop batteries every summer.  When I come back to work, over half of my batteries are unusable.  How can I store batteries over a summer so that they will work when I come back to work?  Is it the heat?  Do I need to unplug the laptops?  Do I need to remove the batteries?

I would definitely unplug the laptops and even remove the batteries. The heat will damage them too so keeping them cool will help as well.

You will  find  if you allow the batteries to discharge to 40%, put them in air-tight bags and store them in the fridge, they will last longer.

Also, when  you are using them, unplug them and allow the laptop to be run from the battery. This will lengthen the life of the battery. Nothing kills a laptop battery more quickly than being plugged in all the time.
