How are TV's measured? Is the advertised size a diagnal or horizontal measurement?

For example if I am looking at purchasing a TV advertised as 40" is that measurement from corner to corner a diagnal or horizontal measurement?

Flat screens are measured from corner to corner, either from top left to bottom right, or top right to bottom left.

A 40-42 inch is a good size.  I had a 50 inch I gave away.  The 50 inch was so heavy, I could not even move it to dust.  My new one is a 40 inch
      and a perfect size.

All TV and computer monitor sizes are measured on the diagonal from corner to corner for example top left to bottom right.
