The term Dedicated Servers comes from the Information Technology sector of engineering.
A Dedicated Server is usually a single computer system which is set up to perform one specific type of task within the computing environment where it resides.
There are Mail Servers, Data base servers, Web Servers and others.  These servers are usually running a higher level operating system like Linux, Unix and it is tuned specifically for the task assigned to it.  This is done so that all the computing power of that particular machine is directed to a specific task.
I have heard that the Google corporation has thousands of dedicated servers all running specific tasks.

I'm sorry, Don Fairchild, no offense but I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you. A dedicated server actually means that the server is designated (or dedicated) only for a single user/client. This means that the user/client can have entire access to the server resources - such as its capacity, for example - without having to share those resources with other user(s). A dedicated server is the contrary to a shared server where server resources are shared among users. This makes it more expensive to hire a dedicated than a shared server.

A dedicated server doesn't mean that the server is dedicated to a specific task. It is dedicated to a specific user/client instead. Google it and you'll find out that Google will be telling you the same as I am here.
