There's a great one from Frank Lloyd Wright. Create a south-facing wall (north-facing in the Southern hemisphere) of glass or with large windows. Then put an overhang along the length of the house. The size of the overhang is calculated to allow the sun to go all the way across the floor when the sun is low in the winter and to barely let any sun in at all when the sun is high in the sky during the hot summer.
It is also really valuable to look at the landscaping around the property. Replacing lawns with shaded mulch keeps a home in Florida cool.
