Has Social Networking been substituting REAL human communication lately?
Its seems funny but that's whats happening and English Teachers are going crazy with all these new accronyms, should they teaching these in class???
It seems to me that's true. People either use social networks or texting on cell phones. I know some people who carry on in-depth discussions on line, but have a hard time communicating to someone face to face. Should English teachers teach what I call chatspeak in class? Yes and no. Most kids already know the chat shortened speech; however, the teachers should be teaching the kids when it's appropriate to use and when it isn't. Unless the grown-up world changes, kids need to learn proper English (both written and oral) if they expect to make it in most career fields.
I agree with sheilamyers in that if all these acronyms are going to be taught in school it only be when it's appropriate to use it, for instance texting friends. I think it's much more important to teach proper English since that is what their kids will be using in later life in things as simple as an email to a colleague.
