How does pocket dial happens on an iphone?

Recently, I've been getting quite a few pocket dials from family and friends. I just like to understand how does this happen? why a smart phone gets to be too smart? Is it a design flaw or feature on purpose?

People have a tendency to be too lazy to lock their phone out before they put it in their pocket. Greg.

yes, but what exactly motion is calling a dial to occur. Don't you have to press a button or something on the screen and I thought it needs to be a human skin to be activated? How does putting the phone in a pocket cause it to dial?

Static will cause the phone to dial. I usually carry mine in my shirt pocket and I have noticed that if I don't lock it out it will turn on. Static can dial, usually the last number, at that time or later if it doesn't time out soon enough. Pants bad
