Because that's something you can see, so it makes more sense to them. But they don't feel like the spiritual or emotional things matter just as much when they can have a huge impact.
Because in our hunter gatherer days, having a stockpile of food, furs, and other necessities was security for the family against starvation and death and a sign that a male could provide that attracted mates.
