You relied on answering machines to record messages or answering services. You may make calls via pay phones or had to wait until you reached a place with phone service to make a call.
We lived quite well before cell phones. That is because we knew no difference. Now that we have them and rely so heavily on them, people would have no idea how to survive without them. Also, we don't have the pay phones, answering services and equipment that was available back then.
