The latest news coverage of the hurricane begs the question. How many past storms started out as a Cat 5 and ended up much smaller by the time it reached land?
I am not saying it would not be devestating in terms of rainfall and flooding...just that we may be putting too much emphasis on “storm of the century” when it may be a normal event.
In the days before satellite, we managed our daily lives and there were probably many potential storms that never made landfall.

This may be one instance where technology advances may be too intrusive on our lives.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" is a philosophical thought experiment that raises questions regarding observation and perception.

This storm is one of many in recent years in my memory where the news media made a huge production leading up to landfall. It was called “storm of the century...” in many cases when it first appeared on satellite, but later petered out or change direction or misses the main target city...

And the fact the media exaggerated and sensationalizes this news is a surprise Jack?

How about how this title, there are articles all over with similar headlines although some hedge a little by saying “could” it be

Hurricane Florence’s Unusual Extremes Worsened by Climate Change, Scientists Say

Which actually misrepresents what scientists say if you read the article:https://www.google.com/amp/s/insideclimatenews.org/news/13092018/hurricane-florence-climate-change-rainfall-storm-surge-risk-attribution-forecast%3famp

You have to wade through dozens of titles like that before you find the truth right here:

Of course Sno would probably say Bastardi doesn’t know weather from climate change -

It is officially a Cat 1 storm when making landfall.

I think we've gotten much better at predictions, although we still never know exactly when, where or how bad a storm will be.

But we also have a definite predilection for exaggeration - "storm of the century" is definitely out of line.  Massive flooding is predicted, yes, but that alone does not make for such a description.
