Write top quality, highly informative articles that people find useful.  You won't have to make a single backlink; others will do it for you.

Ultimate Hubber, I will have to disagree with the other comments.   I'm sorry but great content IS JUST NOT ENOUGH. Well technically, it is but great content needs to be seen in the first place right?

You do not just write great content and expect it to be found.

People need to realize that Google is not God.   Google has ways to decide what is great and what is not.   Meaning that Google itself needs to even find your content in the first place before it can be ranked.

To prove to you that Google is not God, I have had some of my contents copied by other bloggers and they ranked higher in Google.... WHAT!!!

To answer your question....Here are link building tactics:

      1.   Search for blog posts relating to your post, contribute to it and link to your blog in the comments (do not spam)

      2.   Create topics for your post in RELEVANT forums

      3.   Answer questions to related questions and link to your post

      4.   Search for a question that your post answers on Quora, write an answer and link to your post (do not spam too)

      5.   Create posts comparing 2 products or 2 companies.   It is very likely that whoever your post favors would like to link to your post

      6.   Submit Guest Post to Other Blogs or Article websites like Medium

      7.   Submit your blog to top niche directories

      8.   Write a Review of top companies and products and they might link back to you

      9.   Write top list posts because they can go viral easily.

      10.  Create a Wikepedia page for yourself and link to your website there

I could go on and on

I do not want you to make the mistake to think writing a GREAT post would automatically create links.   (Think about it for a second.   People need to find the post before they can link to it in the first place)

    PS
"Backlink is a link one website gets from another website. Backlinks make a huge impact on a website's prominence in search engine results. This is why they are considered very useful for improving a website's SEO ranking. Search engines calculate rankings using multiple factors to display search results."

"SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines."

"Social media is about bringing influencers to the fore. Influencers help companies generate data. Data generates algorithms. Algorithms tailor marketing. When they realized the chemical rush people get from ‘likes’ could identify influencers, they went about the business of making the internet seem like it was meant for human connection.

The best part is that they know that we are incurring a Darwinian adaptation to the digital environment. We are quite literally “marketing devices” to them."  Vincent Michael

If you talk about simple backlink, there is a lot of ways, like web 2.0 m profiling, commenting, bookmarking, etc, but I suggest you make authority backlinks.

Blog commenting works great if you are looking to build backlinks. However, you'd have to search out authority sites related to your niche or your back links would have very little juice.

Glad to have read the thing I had been looking for, though in a concise manner.
    An eye opener too.

    Thanks!
