First of all, see that button next to the letter A? called the Caps Lock? Try pressing it once in a while.

But anyway, the whole fun of GTA is that long after the core missions are over there's a tonne more stuff you can do.  Try collecting cars for Brucie's pal, catching a few of Liberty City's most wanted on the police computer and doing a few insane stunts of the many ramps dotted throughout the city.

for a few more clues go to the internet cafe in the game and visit the following website:

Do you mean noone is showing up on the map?  I think there are times when only one person has missions for you, but there's normally tonnes of cool stuff to do apart from the missions

Use GameFaqs, they have several good strategy guides or you could always buy the official one at the store.

Those official guides are a waste of money in my opinion, they're official because many game developers don't want people to know little things and a community written FAQ is much better since there's loads more info and guidelines in them.
