Angus Otool's Irish Pub & Guesthouse In Karon Beach, Phuket, Thailand
Angus Otool's
Angus Otool's Pub & Guesthouse opened in 2003, across from the Islandia Hotel in Karon Beach. The hotel has since changed it's name to "Centara
Karon", however it remains as an important landmark in the area as one of the tallest buildings and largest hotels in Karon. Angus Otool's
is the first and only true British style pub in Karon Beach, catering to the local Brits and Aussies as well as North Americans that enjoy a pub style setting. The Pub is well known for their traditional British pub food, including homemade pies and bangers and mash, as well as full English breakfasts.
Live sporting events are always a big draw at the Irish pub, with a big screen projector that is perhaps the largest in town. There are always big crowds for the weekend football matches or big rugby tournaments such as Six Nations and Tri
Nations. Cricket is another popular sport with the British and Australian tourists and
expats, however the North Americans usually don't quite understand how those guys play a game for three days and stop for tea and lunch?
The Guesthouse above the pub is clean and modern with reasonably priced rooms. You might think that because the rooms are above the Pub, that there might be an issue with noise, however this is not the case. The rooms are well insulated and thick cement walls offer adequate sound proofing. Rooms include air conditioning and satellite television. We have listed the room rates below.

Location
Angus Otool's Irish Pub is located at the end of Soi Islandia, just off Patak Road (the main road running right through Karon and Kata all the way to Chalong
Bay). The pub is just a five minute walk from Karon's main beach. The
resort areas of Karon and Kata Beach, are popular with couples and
families, with a lot less sleaze and sex tourism that is present in
nearby Patong. Most of the tourists that visit Karon Beach are Scandinavian families with their children. You will see Swedish restaurants
on every corner, with Swedish flags in the bars and restaurants all
around Kata and Karon. The nightlife around Karon is far more laid back
than the "in your face' atmosphere in Patong Beach.
The Staff
Angus Otool's is one of only a few places in Phuket
where the staff speak and understand English well enough to have a
conversation. The staff are very well trained and quite friendly and
service minded. The Pub is owned by a group of expats from the U.K.,
most of whom are not involved with the day to day operations of the Pub.
When you need to talk to the boss, it is best to ask to talk to the
chef (Maurice). Maurice is an accomplished chef with an impressive
resume, including cooking for The Queen Mother at a gentleman's club in
London. Maurice is a down to earth character that is always friendly and
helpful and easy to talk to.
