Updated on March 24, 2011

Festival de Doma y Folklore de Jesús María

by Tim Schmitz

Each January, the National Festival de Doma y Folklore Jesus Maria identifies the memory and hearts of the Argentines and especially their love to their wild horses is expressed throughout the whole festival.

Among native rhythm guitars, renowned singers, improvised payadas, untamed horses and brave men who tame them. This beautiful town in the northern Cordoba province, displays the charm of the national tradition and it demonstrates the most ingrained habits of the argentinian culture. The international popularity of this festival has become synonymous with Jesus Maria.

The festival has its center in the amphitheater José Hernández, while around there are several shows and the best places to visit are the Jesuit Museum, one of the oldest and best ones of its kind, the Rio Jesus Maria with its crystal clear water and the typical barbecues also presenting art shows with major performers. The festival is a meeting point for families all around the country.

The festival takes place every January, which means that it is in the middle of the Argentinian summer and therefore to the best time of the year. Especially the wild horses and their riders attract people from all over the world. If you love horses and like to travel to exotic countries it is an opportunity to see Argentina from it´s best side.

There are even Tour operators, who are specialized in horseback riding vacation like www.ridingargentina.com but see for yourself.
