Ocean Beach aka Dog Beach

Updated on June 2, 2009

Ocean Beach also known as Dog Beach is a cozy little beach with a small town feel, nestled between the San Diego River and the hills of Point Loma. It's the kind of place where you can pull a chair up to the bar for a cup of coffee and settle in with the newspaper before heading out to enjoy the sunshine on your favorite stretch of sand. Ocean Beach, also called as “OB” by locals has been pretty much still is a hippie, liberal, middle-class beach community that loves dogs.

Ocean Beach Dog Beach is open to canines any time. Ocean Beach, is a dog's slice of heaven. Here, pets are not only allowed on the beach, but encouraged to come anytime, cast off their leash and run amok with all their pals. This small beach has plenty of sand for the dogs to run on, and waves for them to run through. On weekends there can be up to 100 dogs here, so be sure you can control your dog, use a muzzle if there's any chance of trouble and keep vaccinations up to date.

The beach attracts a good mix of families, visitors, locals, and fishing folks. It has lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and disabled access. It also has separate swim and surf zones. Ocean Beach has public parking lots at the end of Voltaire Street, Santa Monica Avenue, and Newport Avenue. Street parking is scarce on summer weekends.

The beach even features a custom dual-level drinking fountain one spot for humans and one for dogs.
