There are tons of things, which I am sure some residents will tell you about.
When we were there with two children many years ago, we planned a very quick visit.
We parked at the underground garage at  Union Square-- then walked down through Chinatown to  the Maritime museum and Fishermans Wharf, where we sampled the seafood, then we took the cable car back uphill.  It was all planned with downhill walking.
There is MUCH more, but this was a snapshot of SF.

We went there a few years ago. My favorite things were walking through Muir woods (the forest of living giant 2,000+ year old red woods) and Fisherman's Warf. There are a lot of things to see on the pier (near the warf/bay such as an aquarium and kid's can even touch the rays as they're swimming).

There is also Alcatraz and old navy ships, but I found that less interesting. If you want to tour Alcatraz, reserve months in advance. Taking the ferry, walking around the pier and seeing all the seals is fun too.

It's also kind of fun to experience international food while there. We tried all kinds of dim sum and little Asian desserts while there.

I spent 24 hours in San Francisco on the way back from London & have a hub about things to do while there .
I booked a boat trip to Alcatraz a couple of weeks in advance & enjoyed the trip, went on a tram uphill to the zig zag street, looked round fishermans wharf etc...
