What are some adventurous, out-of-the-ordinary areas to visit in Japan?
I lived in northern Japan for a few years, in Akita-ken (Akita prefecture). You should check out Kakunodate for its cherry blossoms and samurai/castle history. You have to see Mt. Chokai- it's beautiful and a pretty easy climb. Northern Japan is off-the-beaten path. I lived in a very small town called Nikaho-machi where many people hadn't seen a foreigner. It's a very traditional and beautiful part of Japan. The Sea of Japan is right there, too. Enjoy, I miss it terribly. I also lived in Tokyo, interesting but very Westernized.
Make sure to take the Shinkansen (bullet train)! It's a blast...
