I've lived in both places, and they each have their pluses and minuses. The housing costs in both places are horrifically high, but they both have great public transportation. Both are places where there's always something to do, regardless of how broke you might be.

If I had to choose one, I guess it would be DC. I lived on Capitol Hill, behind the Supreme Court building, so I could walk to Union Station, or The Mall. Over a dozen Smithsonian Museums offered free admission. The food options were amazing. I could walk to the farmer's market on Saturday mornings.

I went to college in New York and loved it. I entertained thoughts about settling in "the city" after graduation, but for various reasons it didn't happen. I'm satisfied with how things turned out though so I have no complaints.

I've only visited Washington DC once (for a day) and that was many years ago so I can't really say much about it.

      Why did you love NY?

Mind you this was 25 years ago so my interests were a little different than they are now, but I loved the fact that there were so many movie theaters, rock concert venues, and book and record stores. There was ALWAYS something cool going on.

We spent time in both places last year and would prefer not to live in either of them. However if that was my only choice I would choose New York for easy access to travel to other places ! We had a lovely time there !And the rest of America/Canada /Alaska !
