For a long time the Big Island was neglected by visitors due to a lack of beaches. Today most of the resorts along the Kohala Coast have their own man-made beaches and in addition to that Hawaii offers some of the most unique and colorful beaches in the state.

Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park: the top beach, excellent for swimming and snorkeling, nice facilities and ample marine life.

Punaluu: black sand beach on Hawaii’s south coast, beautiful tropical setting.

Hapuna Beach: long, white sand beach along the Kohala Coast, good surfing and swimming.

White Sands Beach Park: body surfer’s paradise!

Kalahuipuaa: this picturesque bay is located in front of the Mauna Lani Hotel, calm waters.

Kaunaoa Beach: beautiful white crescent bay with outstanding swimming conditions, in the winter a surfer’s beach!

Anaehoomalu Bay: perfect beach for all water activities, especially swimming and snorkeling.

Keoneele Beach: historical significant area, important place of refuge with a small, white sand beach.

Kahaluu Beach: a long stretch of white sand, where King Kamehameha used to meet with his consultants.

Green Sand Beach: only accessible after a long hike, located at Hawaii’s South Point.

Akaka Falls Trail : that 10-minute hike takes you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls – you are surrounded by tropical rainforest and lots of native flowers.

Halemaumau Trail: 3.2 miles long hike crossing the Kilauea caldera.

Devastation Trail: walk through a bizarre moon landscape

Thurston Lava Tube: you can walk along a previous lava tube, impressing flora and fauna!

Kau Desert Trail: it is a 1.6 miles round trip trail through the Kau Desert, fascinating volcanic scenery and you can see the famous footprints.

End of Chain of Craters Road: walk on recent lava flows towards the point, where the lava flows into the ocean! Rangers decide how far you can go!

Waipio Trail: hike into the gorgeous Waipio Valley, the road is steep, so the way back up is only for people in top health condition.

Ka Lae Trail: hike through a rocky and rough landscape to South Point, the most southern point in the USA.

Mauna Loa Summit (caution!): this is the mega hike – it takes you 4 to 5 days to reach the summit!

Along Kona’s Oceanfront: walk along Kona’s oceanfront. It offers a variety of nice stores and oceanfront restaurants.
