   I'd say that the best advice for keeping your dog healthy is to treat him/her like family. If a person eats right, exercises, goes to the doctor to seek treatment for ailments/illnesses and spends time in the company others all in an attempt to achieve optimal health, he/she should treat his/her dog the same way.

   Good healthy diet, exercise, vet visits, all topped with tons of love.  They are pack animals so don't isolate them outside in the yard, let them be family and the rewards are huge.

   I am pretty much summing up what everyone else on here has said, but make sure your dog is eating a high quality food, gets plenty of exercise, goes to the vet for all necessary exams and when there is something potentially wrong, and has his/her oral health maintained with regular teeth brushing.
   
   And yes, showering them with lots of love and attention also helps them live a long, happy life.
