   Do designers set trends?
   
   My bride is a designer.  She is very much in to what is trendy in home dec, fashion, color, etc.  My question is ;  who  or what determines the trend.  OK, More specific ; who says florals and roses are hot for spring?

   I don't think there is a straightforward anwer, I work for a publisher by day and there are MANY talented designer and artistsout there and it seem to be passion, enthusiasum, hard work and a lot of luck. Those people that have that bit of additional luck are the ones that say what is trendy. With this in mind its up to each and everyone to make thier own luck, get out there, be seen online and off ,put yourself in front of the correct publishers and people and be an expert in your field.Then and only then I think you will have the chance to be a trend setter and not a follower.

   I think trends are influenced by TV, magazines, and celebrities.  On TODAY show the other day, they said that bright colors were "Hot" for spring this year.

   At this point in time in fashion, what really counts is a saying called "fashion forward", basically a person must have an extremly creative and inventive mind. As far as who decides at this point in time, unfortunatly it is the latest episode of Cosmo and Vogue. Also another factor that makes a design a leading fashion is what famous person happens to be wearing the design. If I were going to deign a new line of clothing, I would definitly be thinking of things that have never been done before. I would also have my own line of fabrics designed from my modeling pictures and art work and use them in my clothing line. To really make it big you have to not care what anyone thinks about your designs, and just "Follow Your Bliss".

   I think many things set trends, such as other aspects of design, the environment, world events.  For example, the architecture of Versailles was influenced by the fashion of that time.  Doorways and furniture were wide to accommodate their large dresses.  Or Andy Warhol's work was influenced by world events and icons of his time.

   Hi Dennis,
   
   I think a very small, ever evolving and changing group of designers really 'sets' trends. A much larger group of designers catches up on trends sooner than most of the other public and broadcasts the trends in their designs. Then the mainstream public catches onto it and the lagger group of designers too. But still I think the most designers are as subject to trends as any other group of people. We're human and watch TV, look at reality shows, commercial adds, magazines, fashion shows, etc. etc. So therefor we're as subject to trends as anyone else. Yes designers, have the possibility to get the scoop on new trends and set trends, but we follow trends just as much. Unless we're on an island and completely secluded from the commercial Western civilization.

   I work as an illustrator/ animator/designer and personally I think anyone who is creative sets a trend just some of us get noticed a little more.
   The bigger companies that pay a lot for design work, will decide if they want everything to be slick and glossy this month and what I find any clients I get will want that "look" hoping for the same success. This current trend will filter down and ends up everywhere. The same for fashion, except the major design houses will meet up and discuss what will be in fashion this season. If they say black and gothic than any company that designs clothes will be making there version.
   But in saying this, any creative will explore a possible trend in their own time and perfect it. And sometimes that little idea becomes bang on trend and you find your self a very happy creative and finally recognised. This happened to me, my "useless" talent of manga drawing become on trend and for those few months I had more work than I could handle. It was fun while it lasted but now no longer trendy and no longer needed, until next year I guess.

   I agree with Susansisk... trends are influenced by the people and their creations. Also I think there are people who are hired to tell everyone else what the trends are going to be. We are reinventing trends from the new materials and technology that are available to us. Those reinventions become "hot" and then fade away until new tech gives us new trends...

    To a certain degree they do. They cant say that wearing garbage is cool, but if it has a slight chance of catching on...it probably will.
