Has anyone ever been "taken for a ride" by a dishonest mechanic?

My wife went to check for a used tire for our Nissan.  Just an ordinary tire that sells new at Walmart for 60 or 70 bucks. The guy there said they had a used tire for her for $180.00... Really??  I went there myself after my wife told me about this and asked to see this tire. They denied that my wife was ever there. Too many dishonest people out there.

Unfortunately, in just about any industry,  there are many rogues ready to part you and your money and as much as they can!
In the auto industry especially,  you should never send a woman to a workshop to get a quote for repairs or tires!  It may seem 'sexist' but they are seen as prime targets as you have already witnessed.  I would not pay $180.00 for a new tire let alone a second hand one!

I had it happen to me once.

I went in for an alignment and they told me I needed to have a part replaced before I could get the alignment.  I took my car to my oil change guy (he didn't do alignments) and my car didn't even have the part that needed replacing...the manufacturer didn't start putting it on my car until 2 model years later.

Not only that, but they also target certain individuals. A woman is more likely to get "taken for a ride". It's best to find friends in the mechanic industry. Most of them will fix your car if you ask for them to do it when they are off work and for extra money. Luckily, my husband works with a ton of mechanics and has 15 years of working on vehicles. He does everything on my vehicle and all I have to do is pay for dinner, for a couple of days.
