   Any thoughts on how to increase traffic of your older hubs?
   
   I've noticed that many of my hubs generate a high spike in traffic the first couple of days but after about a week then tend to flatline, making them effectively dead. Any experienced hubbers have tips to make more use of these old hubs or is the idea to keep posting new ones and strike while the iron is hot?

   The initial traffic spike is probably from HubPages users. What you want long term is Google traffic from search engine queries, which is why you need to do keyword research before you start writing.    I'm thinking just answering questions might help as well.  While I'm somewhat new, I've noticed that some of the questions that come up are things I've tried to answer in a hub I've published.  I then include a link to that hub in my answer.  (Those questions would probably give clues for better key words too.)

      To make decent income on HubPages, 90% of your traffic needs to come from outside HubPages.  Does that tell you where your focus should be?  Don't expect to make money by networking within HubPages - that's for fun.

   The traffic in the first couple of days is from other Hubbers.  After that, you will have a long lull - possibly months - until Google decides to rank your Hub high enough in search engine results for people to notice it.
   
   People don't come to HubPages and browse around.  The only way most people will find your Hub is if they type something into Google or Bing or Yahoo,and your Hub comes up on the first page or two. 
   
   So, if you pick subjects no one is searching for, no one outside HubPages is ever likely to see them. 
   
   Patience is essential - HubPages says it can take two or three years for a Hub to reach its full potential.

      So after the initial burst, I kinda have to play the waiting game. Would you say it's common to see a natural increase in traffic on older hubs after a couple of months due to its newfound presence in search results?

      It may take two months, three months or six months for your Hub to naturally increase in traffic.  If no one is looking for your subject, it never will.  You can speed the process by learning how to promote your work outside HubPages.
