You gain them for having followers, getting page views, having lots of comments on your hubs, answering questions and so on..
So the more you participate and the more your hubs are viewed the more you gain..
thanks so much, i've been fairly busy and had no idea that these had been added. i just noticed them this morning and found nothing about them in the help tab. great improvement i think. i guess i'm going to have to do better in keeping up with hubpages.
