Videos not working

I'm getting a square with the little x where everyone's videos should be on hubpages (not just my own). Videos play fine on youtube. Is there a sneaky IE setting somewhere that's been accidently turned off? We did get a new antivirus program recently, but even with it turned off the videos are not working for me.

    thanks!

It might mean that your Flash plugin has been turned off.

To see if this is the case, check that flash is enabled in your browser.  (Go to Tools/Internet Options/Program Tab/Manage add-ons/"Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer")

Select "Shockwave Flash Object" and in Settings, select the "Enable" checkbox and hit OK.  Then, restart Internet Explorer.

Or, you might just redownload Flash from http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about and reinstall it to see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks, Larry, that was the kind of tip I was looking for, but no cigar. It is enabled, and when I clicked the link to redownload, it says I have the latest installed.

    Other ideas?

Oh, and it's actually not an x - don't know what that icon is exactly, but the one that tells you photos/videos are not working :-)

OK, another idea is that javascript is turned off.

One way to check this easily is to see the comment box at the bottom.  If javascript is turned off, the comment box at the bottom of the page should be smaller and you won't see the "abc" at the top left corner.

If this is the case, here's the fix:

      Tools->Internet Options->Security Tab->Press the Default Level Button

bummer! comment box looks fine, and java scripting is enabled. I've tried some other misc options in IE, too, and still no luck.

can someone tell me if the video works in my lastest hub (redneck Christmas tree)? I'm pretty sure it does, but just in case.

    any other ideas?

      Hi Dineane,

I checked the video on "An Inexpensive Redneck Christmas Tree: Ornaments from Recycled Materials" and it worked for me.

Another option is to try using Firefox or to update your version to IE7 if you are using IE6.

    Hi Dineane,

As promised, here are some additional questions:

Does video work on Firefox?  If the problem is specific to IE that would clearly indicate an IE setting.

Also, which version of IE are you using?

Thanks, Larry - IE 7, and I'm on a work computer so can't try firefox. My personal computer is at the shop...I might just have to wait until I get it back for videos :-(

      Hi Dineane,

If you go to the Internet Options and click on  the security tab of IE 7, there is a button that says "Reset all zones to the default level."

Unfortunately, if that doesn't solve your problem, I am out of ideas.  Hopefully, when your machine gets out of the shop, you'll be able to see videos at least on your home machine.

    new info, Larry :-)

Someone at work sent me the following and it wouldn't work:
    http://www.sundog.net/carolofthechins/flash/card.swf

And I noticed that Mark Knowles Christmas Greeting in the Hubbers Hangout also ends with swf and I couldn't see that either....

does that help? Think it's related?
