Should fireworks stands be taxed to help pay for firefighting?
This Fourth of July, millions of dollars of legal fireworks are sold by stands around the country. Since they sell a product which causes many of the fires that start around this holiday period, should there be a tax levied against them to help pay for firefighting costs? Or, is this an infringement on free enterprise? What do you think, knowing that we set of fireworks to celebrate America's freedom from tyranny and "taxation without representation."
You raise an interesting question. In most states, the seasonal stands would be subject to collecting and of course, paying the standard sales tax. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in our great state of Texas, the stands need a sales tax permit form the state and a permit from the county they operate in to be able to sell fireworks. A special tax for the stands would not likely pass in our state, and I don't know if they would be able to levy something at the county level. They could, though, raise the fee to operate a stand and have a portion of that go to the county fund. Personally, I don't think we need to tax them, or raise permit fees for that matter. I think we just need more common sense when setting them off.
I don't particularly care for fireworks, but I see no reason to give sellers a special tax, that would seem to be an infringement on people's rights to buy them. If we're going to do that, we ought to tax porn and movies with sexual content for producing more out-of-wedlock children - those moms need money too! The problem is that adding another tax does not guarantee the fire department will hire more people and equipment.

I don’t understand this concept that Obama and many liberals keep clinging to…..So allow me to make it simple. If everyone is taxed at say 10% people who make more do pay more as 10% of a greater amount is more……example 10% of 100 = 10 10% 1000...

I just received a check for my remaining vacation hours that I accrued during my last employment. It wasn't a large amount that I was owed, however, the Federal government saw fit to take 25% tax out of my pittance. The thought I have is that I am being taxed twice. Although the money...
