   It's the U.K., America can't compete, really.  Nowadays. . . .maybe it's different, but looking at rock music as a whole, the U.K. ROCKS!

   The continent of North America has produced some quite reasonable rock music, USA - Bill Haley and the Comets, Carl Perkins, Little Richard, Buddy Holy and the Crickets about the best; Brian Adams - Canada.  I can't think of any Mexicans, Trinni Lopez, does he count?, Some really awful ones came out of the USA, especially Presley, Springstein...
   All of them are not a patch on the rock music that came out of Great Britain, Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, especially Ozzie; Oasis, Blur...

      Hmm MickS, on reflection who came worshiping who first- the Brits of course! That does it for me- US wins by a hair.

   Tough question without maybe being more specific. Is that for instance counting grunge? where you have bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden? Or how about glam rock? Such as Def leopard and Poison? Actually maybe those should count against us. Ha.
   
   MickS' list for Britain is pretty darn good, but I think for America you have to throw in some of the Woodstock era groups: Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence, Sly and the Family Stone, The Doors, etc. But then again, from that group, Britain gets The Who and Joe Cocker. Hmm? That's a tough one. If you could only put up 5 bands I think Britain's got it. Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Sabbath, and the Who. Probably the Grateful dead and The Doors belong in that same category, but I don't know if I could come up with 3 other American groups that do.

   There can be no question that G.B. has put out rock music second to none.On reflection though the U.S. has had such a wide diversity of what could be considered rock. MickS has brought up the 50s from which so many of the English bands got their inspiration;and of course the 60s had the west coast bands like the Byrds, CSN&Y etc. and as junkseller pointed out, Hendrix. Since I'm from the south, I'll throw in bands like the Allman Bros., Lynerd Skynerd [?], on and on.Can't forget Dylan or Nirvana,R.E.M. etc. So arguably G.B. wins,but if so Amer. comes in a very close second.

   Britain. And it's because of America's problem with race at the time (still unresolved). Proof of this: the late, great Jimi Hendrix, an American, HAD to go to the UK to get recognized by his own country. America definitely dropped the ball when it came to R+R.

       They sure have. US wins overall but if rock was broken down into types UK is the choice here.
