What is your favorite film or TV adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens?

This classic seasonal story with the heartwarming message about giving has been told many times in film and on television, from the serious interpretation to comedy and animation. Which adaptation is your all time favorite?

It's a three-way tie between the 1951 Alistair Sim, 1984 George C. Scott, and the 2000 Patrick Stewart versions. The 1970 Albert Finney is hands down my favorite musical version.

I do not wish to discuss what Jim Carrey or Bill Murray did to Dickens story. The less said about those forgettable films, the better.

Sure, casting Patton as Scrooge was strange, and Scott didn't sound very English, but hey--he's George C. Scott. I can't think of a gruffer actor to play old Ebenezer.

You mentioned my two favorites, the first being the George C. Scott one. The Bill Murray "Scrooged" is a close second. And you're right about Scott, and by gosh he was wonderful in the role!

I guess that makes me a purist. We read the original in school, and my students much prefer the Stewart version over the Sim version (because it's in color and has decent special effects).

Now, the one with Pareick Stewart as Scrooge, now the definitive, the previous best and definitive was the one with Alitair Sim as scrooge.  For a fummy one, Scrooged starring Bill Murry.

The Alistair Sim version from 1951... and in black and white..
I keep hearing people say the Muppets version is one of the best but I've never seen it.

The animated "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" is a sentimental favorite because it's the version that introduced me to the story when I was a kid.

The 1984 George C Scott version is definitely my favorite. It is the only version that I own. It is even available on blu ray now.

Scrooged with Bill Murry. I love the modern interpretation.

My family and I went to the movies and saw the animated version that starred Jim Carrey. To my surprise, I enjoyed it very much. Maybe it was the theater atmosphere and the popcorn idk, but the children loved it! The special effects in the movie were amazing! It took the classic movie to a whole new level.

Alistair Sims. hands down! the best scrooge ever.

By far, for me, it is the one starring Patrick Stewart. The scene of him beginning to laugh after waking up Christmas morning - unforgettable! - a consummate performance ... very moving.
