    Hello,
I just had the same question several hours ago. Since Hubpages requires that we specify in the source for the image [Author, License, Site] I was pretty confused where to start from. Especially with the 'license' part.

I knew that images had to be licensec under Creative Commons (CC) or General Public License (GPL), so I started my search from there.

Fortunately the guys at Creative Commons have done some thinking in regards to people like us and have created a wonderful search engine. Here is the bookmark I am using:

    http://search.creativecommons.org/

Just type your search and click on one of the search engines below.

Since in the 'source' of your image has to mention the license in format like 'CC-BY', here is a list of licenses and abbreviations:

    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/

It might seem confusing at first, but I'm sure you will get used to it. And, just in case, here is the Hubpages help page the whole thing started for me:

    http://hubpages.com/learningcenter/legal-image-use

A note - since, just as yourself, I was using Google before starting to use images "legally" for my hubs I have to warn you that at first you might be disappointed with the choice of images you have. But, no worries, all you need to do is change the context in which you search for images.

What I mean is that, for example, you initially start-off searching for a brand logo and a flat tire in the same image. In the CC world this might not be available as brands copyright their logos. In order to avoid this you need to change context and search for a clipart image of someone changing a flat tire.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!

It was late in the evening and since this was my first answer on HP I wasn't really familiar with the option for creating a hub out of my own answer. Didn't notice either, hehe. Nonetheless, you are very welcome. Glad I could help smile

freedigitalphotos.net has good quality photos, but they require you to give credit to the original photographer. They are free and of good 'hubpages' quality

Thanks for the question and the helpful answers! I think all of us do need to know this, since the pictures we may want to use may not be available with us, every time. Although HP insists that we should use our own image, sometimes the exact picture may not be there.
Thanks itknol, for the helpful links!

    Hi Diane,
I try to use my own photos as much as possible. I love taking pictures, and this has worked reasonably well for most of my hubs.
I also use Wikimedia Commons for odd things I don't have my own pictures of. It has been a tremendous source, and I have even uploaded images there for others to share through CC. I wrote a Hub on how to upload images too (it was an assignment for the HP Apprenticeship program) in case you want to read up on licenses some more.

    Hi Diane,
I like to take a lot of pictures with my Android phone wherever I am at. It seems that at the time the pictures make no sense, but they are stashed away for future use with a blog that I have written. I also browse Google images for random stuff, and use quite a bit of them in my articles. If you use a Google image, make sure that you give credit when posting it.

As a photographer I appreciate your interest in finding licensed images - towards this end, I make all y images at http://cascoly.smugmug.com available for free use in hubs or on the web in general as long as a link is included.  the 'share' button in the galleries gives you the required info

there are also microstock sites like dreamstime.com that have free images available in addition to their billable ones.

google images and similar  are problematic since they don't always show the copyrights and many of the images they display are NOT free
