Michael Caine, and he is often the best part of the movies he is in.  He adds what little class some of the duds he has been in had.

Even though his acting is superb, what I really admire is how he managed to dig himself up out of the poverty he was born into and experienced as a child.  The man is amazing and has a lot of business accomplishments unrelated to acting.

It is of course acting that must get most of the credit, because that is what made all the other accomplishments possible.  Sir Michael proves that hard work and determination can bring success even though it may not be easy, especially when the people around you are not supportive and believe you are wasting your efforts like Michael's father did.

I loved all of MC's films, even the so-called bombs.  Like he said, some of them may not have gotten the best reviews, but they built some really fine houses.  He is still going strong after 50 some years in the movies, and he is 80 years old.  He has done hundreds of movies and has millions of dollars, some of which he donates to good causes for children.  Hollywood will not be the same when he is no longer there.

    Matt Damon
£ for £ ($for$) the best actor in Hollywood
There have been better actors but he delivers every time.

I suppose its all a matter of what type of movies you like.

Funny, I don't have one. I thought about this question and then realized I had never thought about it before - it has never crossed my mind that I should idolize any actor or actress to the extent that I have a favorite. I thought about movies, plays and television and I realized I watch for or should I say I am entertained more by the content, the story, the plot the writers' or directors' talents than any one actor. Granted an actor's performance can make or break the project but I never put them on any kind of pedestal in comparison to other actors. Maybe I should, but I just don't see things that way. There are so many good actors and a lot of bad ones but I just don't have a favorite. If I had to pick one, and I guess I do to answer your question (because I don't want to be one of those people who don't actually answer the question of a Q&A but use it as an excuse to pontificate propaganda) I'd pick Sean Connery. Not sure why except I like his looks. If there is a reason to pick a favorite actor I guess that is as good a reason as any other and most likely the real reason anyone has a favorite actor - their looks. How many William H. Macys or Paul Giamattis do you think you'll get here?

Mark Harmon. I know he isn't in a whole lot. Still amazing in the ones he is. Especially NCIS. He does a really good job there.

There is something about him. Probably, he is just very "male," so he's perfect for NCIS.

I love his over all demeanor. His attitude, such kind hearted, all in all tough guy.

The guy that played "rainy" in a flick called "into the wild". Big old tall guy with long hair living in a bus by the ocean.

    But I am biased

Glad to see your supportive.  I'm not much of a movie buff so I don't watch many movies.  Haven't seen Into the Wild, but i'm sure your brother was excellent.

In recent years I would say Tommy Lee Jones, Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins for acting ability, and Harrison Ford for the roles he plays and the films he's been in.

Going further back in time, I would pick Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Edward G Robinson, Humphrey Bogart and my all-time favourite - Jimmy Stewart.

I haven't mentioned any actresses? I must admit somewhat ashamedly that the appeal of female actors for me is too often based on appearance more than ability, which is sexist and wrong. But I love anything with Sally Field, Goldie Hawn or Helena Bonham Carter.

Can I just love Sidney Portier and Paul Robeson for old man river and lillies. Mayber that is racist.

Not racist Ericdierker, but wrong, in my humble opinion!  I should have included the great Morgan Freeman in my list. Actually, thinking about it, Poitier and Robeson were pretty good too! :-)
