Do your children run for the hills when you mention "Chores"?
Not normally because allowances are not paid, and computer access and cell phones are not allowed until the work is done. Sometimes there is protest, but not much because it does not work.
Oh yeah, my seven year old disappears as fast as he can when it is chore time. Sometimes he will even sneak off after he has come down stairs to do his chores, I will go in an check on his progress and he has disappeared. The best part is that nine out of ten times i catch him trying to sneak off, sometimes he will try and sneak past me while I am looking directly at him! When he is motivated by a goal with a reward, he does great. But when he is not motivated it is like pulling teeth to have him complete his chore or to have done right the first time. Chore must be done correctly and completed six days in a row before he earns his reward. He does not get an allowance just yet, but he gets a choice of items within a specified price range.
Yes, run they do!
One child fled to Cambodia where she is teaching English and Math to young Cambodian students. She left me stranded with the dishes.
Her older brother, when asked to take the trash out, migrated instead to Ontario, California, where he is employed as a corporate engineering project manager. Needless to say, he left me holding the bag.
Then there's my cat. I've asked him to help me with my eBay business. He feigned a fur ball attack and used the distraction to slip out the back door.
As a last resort, I looked at my wife. Before I could even say anything, she exclaimed, "Don't even go there..."
No.....they are completely reliable and actually proactive. I would like to believe that it is the brilliant "parenting" that has helped them reach this level of responsibility but I know better. We have followed the same path as one of your other responders and tied their "chores" to the usage of cell phones, internet, computers and allowances. It's amazing how one can get their children's undivided attention if the proper stimulus is used. no chores=no cell phones-no internet-no computer and no money. Works like a charm.
