the problem I see with the public school system.

   In my opinion, public school is a gargantuan waste of time.
   
   To keep it brief, however, I'll just mention a small point.
   
   The method teachers teach us to remember is so faulty and unpractical.
   
   They tell us to repeat repeat repeat and study study study.
   
   However, after much research, this isn't how the human brain works. The human brain makes connections through different subjects, ideas, places, things etc... Our brain isn't a filing cabinet or a hard drive that can just remember or store information.
   
   Our brain is a web.
   
   In any case, if I had to choose the courses to be taught at school, I would teach 2 classes and 2 only.
   
   A Creativity class and speed reading.
   
   creativity to help students learn to make connections between subjects and their daily life and speed reading to help them essentially read faster and stay interested.
   
   The slower you read the less you retain and the less you want to read.
   
   Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

      The public shool system taugh me how to read, a lot of history, calculus etc, provided me with a good library, educated adults to interact with, and a lot of time to think--and ultimately got me the interesting and challenging job I have today.  I did not find it to be a waste of time at all.  Perhaps what you choose to take from the system has as much to do with it as what you are given?

         The only positive I see in school is social skills as well as emotional control. To a certain point.
         
         However, I want to address your thoughts on how school taught you to read. Yes we all learned to read in kindergarten upward. We learned ours ABC's and 123's. However what we learned, was the wrong way to read.
         
         Sub-vocalization is what makes us read at a snails pace. Sub-vocalization is the process in which we see a word, sound it out in our head (with our larynx though) then comprehend it.
         
         Speed reading forces us to skip the sounding step and see the word and comprehend it straight away.
         
         Imagine, reading those boring texts books wouldn't be half the trouble if we could read properly. In my opinion, if people knew how to read properly, they wouldn't have much trouble teaching themselves history, math, science etc...
         
         At school, I got to see us waste so much time chatting in class, talking about superficial things, the bad language, the terrible attitude and atmosphere around me... It just wasn't worth it.
         
         I'm not saying I dropped out, but I did take home school this year lol.

            I also learned how to do calculus, statistics, how to design a scientific experiment, how to balance a chemical equation, color theory and perspective, basic computer programming and a lot of other things that I still use on a daily basis.
            
            My school did not teach by subvocalisation (they called it 'voice pointing' and said it slowed reading speed).
            
            Maybe the problem is not schools per se, but the school you went to?

   people skills class in every year of schooling it would be every home room class in it we should teach tolerance. anger management  . life skills . communication skills . civility. compassion.  and the importance of community service.among many other things that seem to have fallen upon the wayside these days.

   Never has there been more a need for a hero then now . i fear a short lived species we will be at this rate.  Supermen   is the potential all students should realize in themselves.

    The country is in transition. Why can't we also change the old method of teaching in public schools based on the tons of new teaching information we have learned over the recent years? Just a thought!!!

       Because, the government decides all this crap and obviously he doesn't want us at our full potential, but rather at our best to 'serve our country' and the economy.
       
       At least that's the way I see it.

    Last 3 years of public school was a waste of time for me.  Examples:
    They decided to have basketball games during school hours and if you didn't go to the game you had to stay in class. Watching Disney movies got old real fast. Plus I thought basketball was an extracurricular activity? 
    I could not pay attention in class and then just read through the material once before the test and make one of the highest grades. What was the point in spending 4 days on it then?
    I spent 13 years in school and pass every class and grade but if I didn't pass the graduation exam I still wouldn't have graduated.  Why waste all those years then if it all comes down to one test?
    Truthfully, and I'm usually truthful, I wish I had dropped out, taken my GED (because I rock on tests) and then could have gone to college while I was still living with my parents and not having to pay rent.

       The transition folder is what really irked me about 12th grade. I made half the stuff up though and did my folder in 3 days off memory making a lot of it up.
       
       I also found we wasted a lot of time doing pointless events like you mentioned. I even suggested to other people that we could've cut out breaks and broken down the lunch break to 15 minutes. I'd rather spend less 1 less hour at school and 1 more hour doing something I want to do, productive or not.

          Exactly.  12th grade I spent being bored.  I barely had any useful classes since I had gained all the credits I needed to graduate, yet I still had to got to school. So therefore I was an office aid, a library aide, I took a college class, driver's ed and another math class I didin't need. 
          I think we should just give the kids the basic education without the wasted time and then prepare them for college. Public school can easily cut out two years and still provide kids with a better education.  I wonder how much money cutting out two years of schooling would save?
