If I told you I just had a conversation with the Moon, you'd laugh.
If I tell you that I talk to the Moon, telling it my troubles, you'd think it odd, but not insane.
If I told you that I asked the Moon for guidance, you might rightfully ask if I ever get any. I might reply that it does not come directly, but I feel that the Moon guides me in the right direction.
Any intelligent person would assume that my talking out loud to the Moon helps my decision process. We all know that talking things out can be helpful - sometimes just putting things into words helps clarify our thoughts. That person might say that while I may believe that the Moon is involved, in fact it is not.
If I insist that the Moon does talk back, of course you would think me insane.
All the "god answers prayers" stuff is just like this, except that most see nothing odd about it.
However, it's obvious that in our hearts, we know that this isn't real. If someone says their god really is speaking to them, most wil agree that person is insane. But if they say their god guides them, most accept that, even though they would not accept the same idea if it was said to come from the Moon.
I find this rather amusing, honestly. The intellectual dishonesty is obvious, but none of the religious ever notice it.
I suppose what intrigues me most about the notion of a God who answers prayer is someone claimed to be God and to answer prayer. I suppose if the moon made such a claim, that too would intrigue me. In as much as talking to God and God talking back is difficult for you to digest, it does not invalidate the possibility just because you have never experienced it. After all, if it can't happen, it won't. On the other hand, if someone thinks it can, they own the possibility. It is difficult for me to discount someone elses possibility. If God talks to me and doesn't talk to you, I can only conclude that you do not wish a conversation. The ultimate proof is not my burden, it is my rest.
"Intellectual dishonesty" you say?
It is much more of an intellectual dishonesty to compare the Moon to the Creator of the Moon. Surely that's a basic concept easily understood by anyone. Or so I thought.
I've had this conversation with many. It's troubling to me when I ask, "Do you hear audible voices?" and their reply is, "YES!"
Pcunix, you are preaching to the choir.
Those horrid, evil atheists already know and understand what you are saying almost instinctively, while the deists will complain that as the moon (oops, I mean G-d) has never spoken to you that you can't possibly understand that it actually does speak to believers.
Nor does it merely guide - it actually speaks directly into the heart muscle (or brain cell or whatever) with absolute knowledge transference. You refuse to hear it and therefore laugh at the concept of talking with the moon, but if you just listen you would receive the same magical information.
You will not convince them otherwise.
Hey, at least you can prove the moon exists!
On top of that there have been people who most definitely worshiped the moon, then as they settled into farming life the sun became more important and they started worshiping that instead.
If you do speak with the moon maybe you could ask if it's feeling were hurt when folks started worshiping the sun instead? Poor moon
Don't mourn the moon. Nowadays, much of the magickal allure of the Moon seems to be gone. She is no longer the mystery She once was. We know the makeup of Her physical form: rock and dust. We know She doesn't shine from within, but in reflection of the Sun.
Yet still She holds powers we scarcely fathom.
For instance, the Moon's tidal influence on all the elements is astounding.
And the power of the Full Moon to effect humans and other animals, even the weather, continues despite Her scientific classifications.
Now more than ever She becomes a symbol to us of what is possible.
For what are we, but dust?
What light do we shine with, but the Light from a sublime Source i.e the sun.
The Wiccan practice of Drawing Down The Moon is one way we connect with this Light. Wiccans today draw down the Moon to fill ourselves with the Light that is the Creative Essence of the Universe.
Today the Moon, to those of the Wicca religion, is just as mysterious and magickal, just as wonderful and sacred as She was to our ancestors.
Today, perhaps we see the Moon even more as our distant ancestors did, before the divisions of religion. Perhaps they too saw Her as the Essence of Divine Light that is available to us all.
The importance of the Moon in Wicca cannot be overestimated. For all of these reasons, for the Feminine Energy She conducts, reverence for the Moon continues to be at the heart of Wicca spirituality.
But remembering the moon is a symbol.

Gravity is not astounding and we do fathom it.
That is nonsense.
I wonder if the real question we should be asking is why a believer of any religion should feel hurt that others don't feel the same and say so when religious conversations get started up?
Are their religious beliefs so weak that they cannot bear to stand alone with those beliefs?
Do they know on some level that their belief is not logical and feel uncomfortable facing that fact?
Do they maybe not really hold the beliefs they claim and are only pretending so as to use religion as a tool for power and control?
I am happy to be alone in my beliefs, and am
I know it's is not logical and am comfortable with that, humanity itself seems illogical to me.
I don't have any desire to control anyone, I either accept folks as they are or I don't welcome them into my life, it is my life after all.
hey, don't be so hard on the moon.. not only does it speak, it writes poetry each and every night.
luvpassion - The moon isn't made of cheese then!
On a more serious note, I enjoyed reading your post. I can see more sense in Wicca then in Christianity, not that I take to any belief system but I do find many of them interesting and Wicca is definitely one!

I am a spiritual person -- this does not define my beliefs or my religion. What it does mean is that I am true to myself and my beliefs. I was raised a Christian and still have the basic beliefs, that God and Jesus do exist. I pray to God and I talk with Jesus for guidance and healing -- I also...
