   The Earth casts a long shadow behind the side facing the sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon enters the Earth's shadow. This shadow has two parts: the known completely in the shadow of the umbra and the partial shadow called the penumbra.
   
   When the moon is completely immersed in the umbra, a total solar eclipse occurs, and if only part of it falls into the umbra, a partial solar eclipse occurs.
   
   During totality, the moon is not completely invisible. This is due to the fact that some are broken by sunlight on earth thin atmosphere into the umbra and light up the moon, so that copper-red. Its brightness varies for different total solar eclipses as a function of the geometry of the moon the way through the umbra and atmospheric conditions on Earth.
   
   Sometimes the only moon in the penumbra, without the umbra. This is a penumbral eclipse.       very early for the east coast (US) set your alarm for 1:30 if you want to watch the entire show, providing it's not cloudy. totality should be an hour later. NASA suggests watching at 3:17 to see the moon covered in amber light.

   I just walked outside and wow, it's completely clear and the moon is over my house.. it's going to be a starbucks morning for sure because I want to see it and I also have to work tomorrow.  enjoy if you stay up!

         hi habee, I feel like a little kid, I'm so excited. have your camera ready? my dog is really going to wonder what we're doing outside when we're usually sleeping!
         He's been very hyper today.. he was outside earlier playing with his rope toy by himself. we have a park bench in the backyard and he was running around it throwing the toy in the air and picking it up and throwing it in the air again!
         
         and we had already taken a long walk.

   We have a cloud cover right now (1:56AM), left over from the snow earlier today.  And the sky is pink!
