president Obama wants a European model economy

“Barack Obama is now putting the United States squarely a decade behind Britain. Listening to the President’s State of the Union message last week was like a surreal visit to our own recent past: there were, almost word for word, all those interminable Gordon Brown Budgets that preached ‘fairness’ while listing endless new ways in which central government would intervene in every form of economic activity.
Later, in a television interview, Mr Obama described his programme of using higher taxes on the wealthy to bankroll new government spending as ‘a recipe for a fair, sound approach to deficit reduction and rebuilding this country.’ To which we who come from the future can only shout, ‘No‑o-o, go back! Don’t come down this road!’” -Janet Daley

It is apparent that the European model of socialist economics is failing and we are headed in that direction with the current polices that are being implemented by the president.

Honestly from reading the posts below this topic clearly stirrs some serious societal issues. In reality Capitalism Cannot succeed without some socialistic ideas and vice versa. What we should do is find a mid ground where business can do business but where ccorporations do not influence politics. A system where you can be a millionaire and not worry abou tlossing your wealth but also where things like vet benefits, healthcare, and education are kept a priority. Uncontrolled capitalism will only give the monopoly like corporations more control over society and without control over itself society can never hope to be a true democracy.

I actually read an analysis the other day that said just the opposite! Said that the big money Republicans are the ones going for a European model. Because they are letting the banks off the hook for the damage they caused, and putting austerity measures on the people as a means to solve it. Like some are suggesting here.

Iceland is who we should follow. They told the banks no way in hades were they paying for the banksters theft! True Human spirit!

In my ever humble opinion, European style Economy is just a bad idea.  Just read the newspaper, watch the news.  What we as a country should be asking ourselves is why we would even want this type of economy.  Maybe, we need to just change the way we approach life and work, vote, and instill a sense of pride in ourselves and our country and stop looking for hand outs.

Lindy, surely you don't mean we sure do away with Obama's ideology of a complete welfare state where we're totally dependent on our government for all our needs?

      Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

"Maybe, we need to just change the way we approach life and work, vote, and instill a sense of pride in ourselves and our country and stop looking for hand outs."

There's no 'maybe' about it. You hit the nail on the head.

We have a whole group of people in this country who do nothing but look for handouts rather than a hand up because it's easier. They have no pride in themselves much less this country and simply don't care unless it directly effects them.

I like what Rep. Allen West said.

I have been taught and teach my kids that God helps those who help themselves.  That is what we should be doing.  And with the state of our country and the mentality of political correctness is making us all go a little crazy.  Bottom line is that maybe we all need to stop worrying about who has what and start figuring out how to make our own way.  After all God gave us all brains and the ability to work.  Maybe we should try that before we overthrow capitalism and democracy.

Fact is the economy was going down before Obama , Obama policies tanked the rest of it. I do think the one funny thing is as much as you blame Bush for the amounts of money the rich make, but you never say anything about the fact they are making more money than ever under Obama.

ACA- Has already cost the average American several thousand per person, waves of new taxes go into effect this year and more next year, a tax 3 1/2% on selling your home or any real estate over $250,000, new regulations and charges to both health care providers and pharmaceutical companies resulting in higher prescriptions and higher healthcare policies, several million less people insured today than before Obamacare started. Strike one

GM LOAN- We sold all our GM stock at a major loss, as part of the bailout, over 550,000 auto workers laid off and not rehired despite Obama saying they were. Government spent $270,000 on every Chevy Volt sold, GM still operating at a loss. Strike two

The stimulus, I could sit here and tear it up for all the losses but the CBO reports, and there are several including one this week, that can explain all the failures of it better than I can. Well lets see that 3 strikes, he is out of here.

If you think those were successes, I wonder what it takes for you to see something as the failure it is.

"One of the more 1990s features of Romney's very 1990s campaign is his attempt to describe Obama as a European rather than an American. He means by this the notion of Europe as a beleaguered, depressed welfare state (although some moderator might ask him about Germany's 5.5 percent unemployment rate, and why that's such a dreadful model).

The irony is that in 2012, in the real world outside of Mitt's pander-world, much of Europe is being run by center-right governments, who are being dictated to by the center right government in Berlin. And what are 2012's European policies with respect to the economy? Why, they're much closer to Romney and the Republicans than Obama and the Democrats."

From a member of one of those European economies being so derided. This crisis is not the fault of the welfare state model in Europe. It is a result of bailing out banks who made bad investments. They made bad investments because the weren't regulated. De-regulation was an American ideal. Smaller government. It almost destroyed my country, Ireland, and has saddled us with decades of austerity and debt. Our banks failed, and the debt spread to government, which basically went bust and had to be bailed out. The US isn't in a all too different situation. Remember not so long ago the federal debt ceiling was increased to avoid default? European economic systems arent the problem. They all are.

Actually if we could just freeze government in place and not allow it to do anything at all - the American people would solve all these problems.  Government does more to get in the way of progress and solutions than it does to facilitate solutions.

And here are 2 true-blue Americans!! Concerned for their country, as she had given them so much:

"Billionaire Bill Gates said recently that, “I don’t feel like people like myself are paying as much [in taxes] as we should.” Actor Chris Rock echoed the argument, saying said he would be fine with paying more. “I’ll pay higher taxes. I look at it this way. I can pay higher taxes and people can have jobs, or I can pay lower taxes and I have my kid’s teacher asking me for a loan, which is true,”

It ALL goes together, and 99% fell to accomodate the 1%...this is the horrible truth.

And Obama wants to reverse it...this is the wonderful truth.
And all the waaaaaa waaaaaa is but noise to a mothers ears....like nails scratching down a chalk-board....or the dulcet sounds of Russsshhhhhhh throwing a hissy-fit.

It was the Dem congress overspending that got us here, the Dems regulations that allowed the loans that created the bubble. and so on and so on. I hope Obama wins, I hope he follows through on everything he says like eliminating the Bush tax cuts, doubling capital gains. And when you live on the street I wonder if you will still be singing his praises.

It's simple, once the president pumps enough fake money into the economy to create a false image of economic recovery, people will be parading in the streets to have him re-elected. Then after the damage is done, he will create another crisis situation, so he can propose another unsubstantiated stimulus package to pump more fake money into the economy so to force businesses into default, thus allowing the government the ability to seize more private companies, and further his vision of a socialist, big government, planned economy. Welcome to Commieland.

And it's all going to be about rushing the proposal to the house floor to avoid an imminent crisis that he created.

You think that the rich people have all the money? That's a joke!
Tell that to the millions of American consumers who on a daily basis drive their big cars and trucks down the street to shopping centers, grocery stores, tourist attractions, and other various leisure time outings. Tell them that they aren't making enough money.
The truth is corporations don't have all the money, America has the biggest middle class in the world. No other country comes close.
America has been the leader in scientific and technological innovation since it's inception. it was Americans who invented the Airplane, the telephone, the oil well, the revolver, the internet, the motorcycle, the assembly line, the artificial heart, the laser, the air bag, the automatic transmission, the internet, the cotton gin, the microprocessor, GPS, the microwave, the nuclear submarine, radiocarbon dating, the list goes on and on and on.

On a yearly basis America, which makes up only 5% of the worlds population, puts out 14 trillion dollars worth of the worlds GDP, the runner up is China who only puts out nearly 5 trillion. We do this on a yearly basis and we do it with 24% of the population that China has.

The fact is that you and I are part of the top 10% of the richest people in the world, but all you can think about is the top 1% of the 1%. Yeah there are going to be people richer than you and me, that's always going to happen, but to say that we are getting screwed by corporations is void of reason when clearly there is so much abundance in this country. And to play it down by using class warfare propaganda is simply an attempt to push failed socialist ideology on the listener.

    Caste system, USA.

"We’re told that all we have to do is pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and anyone can succeed. Unfortunately, the game is increasingly rigged against those who weren’t smart enough to pick wealthy parents.

All my life I’ve heard Latin America described as a failed society (or collection of failed societies) because of its grotesque maldistribution of wealth. Peasants in rags beg for food outside the high walls of opulent villas, and so on. But according to the Central Intelligence Agency (whose patriotism I hesitate to question), income distribution in the United States is more unequal than in Guyana, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and roughly on par with Uruguay, Argentina, and Ecuador. Income inequality is actually declining in Latin America even as it continues to increase in the United States. Economically speaking, the richest nation on earth is starting to resemble a banana republic."

Obama is trying to reverse this.....and what are the R's trying to do? Even MORE inequality! IMO

For every one who can sidestep the glass ceiling there are many who can't

True but they have to try by either knocking the hell out of it with what they have or finding something somewhere else. Again, they just have to want it bad enough.

I don't know about the UK but, if you want it bad enough here, there are grants, scholarships, and loans to be gotten. They just have to put forth the effort to find them and make it happen.

I'll grant you this one, John. Some are happy to be where they are and that's all that's really important. The only person responsible for one's happiness is themselves.

Obama's primary puppetmaster, George Soros, desires nothing less than a European model. Clinton allowed Frank-Dodd to get the ball rolling and when the bubble burst Obama showed up to hang the horse-collar on the US financial system. Soros wants to see the SEC and the various regulatory arms out of the picture so that he can more easily manipulate the banking industry on an international scale. Obama, lacking any morale fiber or values, is the perfect mule to carry that task into the mines. Give him four more years and the American financial system will be in shambles along with middle-class America and it will all be done while talking about taxing the rich and feeding the poor...just something to divide and conquer...nothing else. The bait is there on the hook, all he has to do is get middle-class America to swallow. WB

We appear to need new rules which require our representatives and our senators to actually do their jobs!  How will that happen when they make their own rules?!  Putting the Social Security Trust Fund where they could spend it to make themselves look good has been a catastrophe.  Failing in their oversight responsibilities for monitoring the banks and lending institutions got us into our present mess which is so hard for the country to climb out of.  Spending too much time raising their politcal campaign funds, too little time in session, giving committee chairmen too much power to hold up legislatain and appointments....the list goes on and on.  How do you change the Ship of State's course when there is no steering wheel?  Choosing a great president for our next four years will mean little, if he or she has to do the job with an inoperative Congress!
"Give a man a little power and he soon begins to use it unrighteously."  We have laws to protect against "unrighteous" but how do we really handle "incompetent" when every state and district seems to buy into the idea that "It's not our guy/gal.  It's those other ones!"?
