Duplicate Content

   Can someone help me out with this.  I submitted a Hub yesterday morning and a few hours later it was unpublished and marked as Duplicate Content.  I've done some research on this and I don't see how this can be?  I only publish here on HubPages so I'm confused as to how my content could appear somewhere else on the web.  Is there a way to find out where the duplicate content is located?  No knowing what to do I rewrote portions of the Hub and resubmitted it.  Initially the Hub had a note saying that it was resubmitted and would be reviewed, now it says nothing, just that it's not published and it's still showing the Duplicate Content violation.  Help!  I did send a note to HP's asking how this could be, no reply yet.  Do they normally respond?  Also, how long does it take to review and what type of notification will I receive?  Should I just wait and see what happens?  Or should I just delete the Hub?  I'm still fairly new to HubPages and this is the first time this has happened to me.

      I find they respond quite quickly. But, it is the weekend so it may take longer.
      
      It may be you have too many quotes. I had that message once and cut down the amount I quoted from a speech and it's okay now.

      This will also happen when "quoting" statistics and features in a review or guide hub. The way to offset this, is the same as described in other responses here, to add more "body" text to the hub. More of this type of text, that is unique and not duplicate, will add more weight to the hub and pull away from the duplicate content used. I do believe there is a formula based on percentages of what can be duplicate in relation to overall text in the hub that is unique.

      I happened to me. Well, what it takes is time to edit it until it is published. Probably do a major editing on your hub to be sure.

   This happened to me too when my quote was too long, in comparison to the rest of the words on the page. I had listed chapter titles in a book for a book review, and apparently other articles also had that, so the same words appeared in the same order.
   
   Besides shortening your quote, another option is to add more information around it, so it is a lower percentage of your entire hub.

   I just wrote a Hub on the Poet Laureate, Phillip Levine.  This was in tribute to national poetry month.  I copied one of his poems in my Hub, and also got my info on him from Wikipedia (which I did NOT copy any of that), but wrote in my own words.  In your opinion, would I have gotten the duplicate notice because I copied his poem or for the research I did on Wikipedia.  I'd just like to know for the future. I was going to send a message to HubPages, but thought this would be quicker.  Many thanks.

      There is a good chance that the poem is copyrighted and not free for republishing.

         The poem had a "permission to be used" notation, so I used it.  It's a famous poem that I'm sure has been reprinted a zillion times on the net.

               I agree. Don't give it up. You can always tweak it, or maybe publish it elsewhere like I did with Titanic article. Don't waste a good article, because they say it is duplicate.
               Also, don't let inappropriately worded comments make you feel like you are dumb.

      I did a hub on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. I got the duplicate content message. So I took it down, and wrote it on my own blog. It is hard to write about subject that has been written about so many times.
      I have also gotten it about hubs I have written on herbs. There is just only so many ways you can talk about lemon balm.

         Thanks!   I got my research from Wikipedia.  I did not copy their language, but changed it considerably.  You are right, when you write about something that has been written about previously, it's really hard not to duplicate some portion.  I'm just going to leave the Hub alone, it isn't worth the hassle of trying to revise.  I'd just like to know for future writings what was considered "duplicate"

               So long as it was on the publisher's or poet's own site that might be reliable.  Elsewhere it is generally not.

   Thank you all for the advice.  I did rewrite a portion and resubmitted and it was published.  I did ask them about the duplicate content and they did tell me so do ask.  You are right about one thing, topics that have a lot of content on the web make it difficult to not have some portion of your Hub be considered duplicate.

      I only had that problem once when I quoted a speech. If you want to be a writer you have to put everything in your own words.

   The same thing happens on recipes a lot. How many different ways can people write about how to make a cake? Sometimes I spell out the measurement abbreviations and that helps some.
