Yup, I said it, Google Shmoogle!
It is obvious people ARE sheep.
Over the last five years everyone has just played "followed the leader", who apparently is a well branded Search Engine. Every single day -sometimes three times a day- I see posts, articles and forum concerns about this company.

Sure, they have what can be defined as no less than a monopoly on advertising, which supposedly equates to cha-ching in peoples pockets. Yet, nearly all nod in agreement, they are not making all that much. The ones who are, went through proverbial hell to make that number. A number that keeps changing with every second.

What gives with the Shmoogle obsession?
They are not the only PPC company out there.
They are not the only Search Engine.
Actually, they are not all that good of a search engine {no offense to the religious Shmooglers}, which is evident by the massive amounts of changes that they keep incurring to made themselves a "better" {more controlling} product. In fact, I have never seen a company create and dump so many products in such a short period of time, as Shmoogle has.

Granted, HP is in bed with them, because nearly all of their products are attached to the hip in some manner. But for crying aloud, why do they have to be the only one? Makes no sense. What's more is they make people nervous, reluctant and a few other choice words I will refrain from.

Every successful company uses multiple venues to build revenue and supply product for its people. Restaurants don't buy everything from one vendor, right? So why are people not using this same technique here? Why isn't HP expanding its vendors as well, if nothing else but a fallback should the Shmoogle go on the fritz?

    James.

People aren't sheep, they're just facing reality.  Sure, Google isn't the only search engine out there, but it's still the main search engine used by the vast majority of people in the world.  So if you "target" the smaller search engines, you're targeting a far, far smaller audience, which makes your job much harder.

There's no point telling online writers to change their search engine, if the customers don't.  People are lazy - even if Google isn't that good, it's what they've always used and it will take a bomb to make them change their habits.

As for PPC - I agree, Adsense isn't the be-all and end-all.  HP has recognized that  and moved away from it - most Hubbers are now using the HP Earnings program, which includes HP's own ads, eBay and ultimately Amazon, with only a small portion of Adsense thrown in.

I've been trying to use Pinterest and Facebook to generate a lot more traffic - at least you don't have to rely on bots that way!

I regularly try other search engines (Bing, Yahoo etc), and use search engines a lot at work.  Google, especially Google scholar, works the best.

I regularly try other PPC and affiliate advertising (chikita, PW, clickbank etc), but Adsense remains the most profitable (I use project wonderful and a direct advertising deal as well on some of my sites which contain material too adult for adsense).

I don't know about anyone else, but I will keep using what works best. If OP wants to suggest there is a superior product out there, I will try it.  but if it doesn't find my target content or earn the most money, I will drop it like a hot brick.

I do tend to agree with the OP that people are sheep, to the extent that we tend to rely too heavily on search engine traffic. I've read that it's not ideal to have the highest percentage of traffic coming from search engines. We want to also build our direct and referral traffic, which can result from quality, authoritative writing on topics that we know well. Organic backlinks certainly help in this regard. Posting on reputable blogs or other relevant sites can bring in targeted traffic.
