I'm hoping someone in here knows if it's possible to identify a WordPress.org theme instead of just copying someone's theme files. Yes, unethical and maybe wrong, but Im at a loss otherwise.
I've found a really cool theme I like, and want to use it as a baseline to my own site. Of course it wont be a direct rip, just a design to work from.
I've googled it but just come up with sites claiming how to clone (steal) a theme. If at all possible I'd like to know what the theme is that the site I like has used. It's probably a premium theme. Right clicking-view info only shows wordpress 3.2.1 as generator.

Post the site name here and we can have a look.  I've studied a lot of themes in my time and may recognize it, or be able to suggest something similar.

On my Wordpress theme the name of the theme is stated at the bottom of every page automatically. It is a free theme, but a very good one (SWIFT). It even states who the creator is at the bottom of the page. That said, I am writing on paid for domains that I own which I have downloaded the WP theme on to. Not sure if this is the same in your case, or if it would make a difference were it not.

When you right click on page and click on view source, look in the coding for the words "theme" or "style sheet", and the name may follow.

Right clicking on the site 'view source' shows
'___.com/wp-content/themes/___/style.css'    -with just the name of the site in the blanks, so I'm thinking it's a premium or custom built theme.  So I guess I'd have to find a way of copying/cloning it?

Have a look at Bloggermint or DIYThemes or any good ones that can be tricked with nice widgets. The name - as Misty says - is usually put at the bottom of a theme. But if it's paid and bought, the owner can delete the name on some of them. Many WordPress themes get copied by some coders who then port Blogger versions over to the Google-owned Blogger platform.

thanks. I'll check bloggermnt and diythemes. the site does not have any "powered by wordpress" or created by.. at the bottom of the page or anywhere.

Why not take a quick look at open-source-varsity.

They have quite a few WordPress themes that are all free to download and pretty well documented as well.

You can also ask for a theme to be customized if you are okay with spending a few bucks.

Additionally, on a sister site there are a ton of WordPress tutorials all free to access and download if required.
