I just published a new hub, and forgot to do the summary. As soon as I discovered the error, I went back in and fixed that oversight.
However, the hub (even after refreshing the page) is still showing up with the first part of the first paragraph in place of the summary.
Is there a way to fix this? Is it only a problem within Hub Pages, and if I promote the article on FaceBook, will it show up correctly, with the actual summary?
(I don't like the first part of the paragraph being used, as it is sometimes a 'give-away,' where I prefer to keep a bit of mystery...)
As for Facebook, many times using the short URL will pick up the summary much better than the normal URL. The short URL can be found on your hub when you click stats, then "metrics"... the short URL will be found at the bottom. You may have to wait a short period of time for stats to show up if you have just published the hub however.
Where are you seeing that? On the Hub itself? If so, it sounds like it did not save properly. If you're seeing it on Google, then be aware that Google pleases itself when deciding what to display - it will sometimes show your carefully crafted summary, and sometimes show your first para instead. The best thing is to craft your first two or three lines as if it was a summary, that way you have it covered either way.
And do bear in mind, if your summary is actually a summary of your Hub, you're doing it wrong. It's the equivalent of the "blurb" on the back of a novel - a teaser, to make your reader want to click and read more.
Hi, Marisa--
I was seeing that on the "news feed" page here on HP, where it shows up to auto-announce you just published something.
Hmmm....welll....sometimes those 'blurbs' are a nutshell synopsis of the book...
I try to write it to be a "hook," but without really summarizing the hub...I guess it depends on the subject matter. I think my problem is, brevity is not my strong suit, so when I try to say someting in 2 or 3 short sentences, ... ... ...I fall on my face.
Sometimes stuff here doesn't show up real time. Give it a little while and it should be fine.

Just when I think I'm doing reasonably well at getting up to speed here, I see one more new thing - new to me, I mean - that looks like something I should have noticed when I first joined HP.Today, it's "customized summary" vs. "automated [or automatic?] summary." ...

Should hub summaries be exclusive from intros (first paragraph) to your hub? I've noticed that some hubbers use their summary as the intro to their hub. It certainly saves time. I usually write a separate summary and expand on it for my intro or opening paragraphs. Does it matter?

I keep posting hubs without writing the summaries. Bad summaries can set your hub back for weeks (or ever if you don't notice). They are almost as important as the title. Some kind of warning- like 'before you publish this hub please check the summary box' would help.

It would be really nice if the Summary Ap had a Character Limit Counter like on twitter so you don't lose the latter part of your text when "Done Editing", then have to go back to cut the text to the required limit.

I'm finding that the Custom Summaries do improve traffic as they were said to do.I want to know, however, from the folks who do get good traffic on their good hubs still, that recently created a custom summary - how many words should this summary have? Of course putting search terms/keywords...

Does anyone have solid tips on the best way to optimize the summaries? Mine have all been automatically created (only because I didn't know there was the option to create one), and they look like they're essentially the first paragraph of the Hub.Is it better to have, say, a one-line summary...
