This is an issue where both sides bear significant guilt, the left is guilty of throwing accusations of racist around too easily but the right has the automatic reaction of crying foul. The sad truth is racism is ingrained in large tracts of the GOP and the conservative movement, this is not an opinion but a fact.
46% of Mississippi GOP primary voters believe interracial marriage should be illegal and only 40% believe it should be legal. This is an extreme racist position of people who want it enforced by law.
Similarly high numbers were found in Alabama and slightly lower numbers in other deep red states.
We live in a country where only 17% of people explicitly dissaprove of interracial marriage.
Is the average conservative racist? No But there is a strong subset probably between 25 and 35% it is essential that we stop ignoring that problem and instead honestly deal with it and the GOp needs to stop pretending the problem does not exist.
After reading your links, from what I can see, no independents or democrats were polled. So the real question is, are we looking at a Mississippi GOP issue, or a regional one? We don't have enough data to make that determination. If democrats and independents in the area responded in a similar fashion (at least as far as their beliefs on interracial marriage), then what we are looking at is a regional trend which has nothing to do with political party.
AJReissig,
You hit it on the head. These kinds of polls are intended to make one side look bad. Otherwise, democrats and independents would have been polled too.
ETA until Conservatives swarm in proclaiming interracial marriage is either immoral or irrelevant: 4 minutes.
Just curious...where does the data come from? I don't know if the statist is true or not; just wondered where the numbers come from. Also, to put the numbers in perspective, how does that compare to democrats in the same state? What about independents? And were only white GOP members polled, or other ethnic groups as well? With the little bit of data provided, you really can't conclude anything, other than your attempt to make the GOP out to be racist.

If marriage laws were discriminatory, is the presidential age restriction also discriminatory? In the US you must be at least 35 to be President. Is that discriminatory? It's not 'for your own good' like the minimum age for alcohol consumption. It's not a safety issue like the minimum driving age.

Why do people have a problem with interracial marriage and relationships? Does God?I was wondering why people look down on couples who are of different race and if God had a problem with it... I can't see Him having issues with it but I could have missed that in the bible. I know certain races have...
