The Third "F" Word

   The overwhelming majority of people have THIS malady.  It immoblizes them.  It even makes them go into a panic mode.  It causes real anxiety.  It causes many to question and avoid their innate greatness.  It also causes people to choose to the path of the least resistance and the most comfort.  It makes people quite risk averise, choosing the middle road.  It makes people blindly and mindlessly conform to familial and societal constructs.  It makes people afraid of.......THEMSELVES. 
   
   What is FEAR to YOU?   Is FEAR mostly imagined?   Is FEAR an inherent part of the human consciousness?  How can FEAR be unlearned, if such can be the case?  Let's discuss.

      Fear
      of mice
      of snakes
      of spiders
      of heights
      of flying
      
      When these things disable a person, halt normal reactions or thought, cause irrational actions such as jumping on chairs or freezing in place, they are mostly imagined.  They are a lack of ability to control one's emotional condition.
      
      Fear
      of a drunk behind the wheel
      of road rage
      of someone on PCP
      
      is rational and reasonable.  All of these are known to be dangerous and quite likely to harm others.  Such fear is healthy and should be heeded as a survival trait.

      In most of my experiences, fear is learned rather than something we are born with. I'm afraid of the dark because I've hallucinated things in the dark. I'm afraid of water because I've almost drowned. I'm afraid of going for a walk by myself because I was once almost abducted...etc. etc.

   Of course, some fears are quite legitimate as you have aptly stated.  In fact, smart people avoid life-threatening and otherwise dangerous situations.  However, many fears are quite irrational.

      Exactly.  There are two; factual and reasonable, and irrational, a product of emotion rather than environment.

   I too have irrational phobias and fears, like most other people.
   Some can be controlled and overpowered, but some are inherent or part of my subconsciousness.
   Fear of being stranded in traffic jams....for example, is irrational and can be controlled.
   Fear of being stuck in a remote place without a phone.....is basic survival/rational fear.

      You do know that if you are in a remote place, your phone won't work anyway?  It won't help you survive at all, unless maybe you can use the battery to make a spark and start a fire.

   I don't like sharks cause they have teeth and they chew off your parts and also I hear that music and see that pic. and I never even saw the movie. Sharks are a rational fear, although I wrote an entire statistical hub on why they are not a rational fear.
