Had my first copied hub

   I followed the HP links and filed the DMCA report. Now what? Do I need to do anything else? How will I know if the article is taken down off the site?

      I wish I knew. I have a question and I am serious: If my hubs are not being copied does that mean that they suck?
      I just had to ask or go nuts.

         No. That's what I thought until it happened to me. It makes you made. It means someone what just trying to find something they could post and make money from lots of ads.

            I will do that. And I was mainly joking about my hubs. I put it like this: If I were a hub burglar, I would be very desperate to copy MY hubs.

               Hi Kenneth,
               Usually you get a little red "c" next to the hub on your accounts page if it's been copied. I tracked down a few, HP even gives you info to help. But often the site the person posted our stuff on is already hosted by someone else before we find out our work is stolen. It's time consuming. I try to contact the site myself, and have asked people to take my work down, and usually they do. But some of the hubs are so old, I don't think it's worth the trouble at this point.
               
               Your hubs are fun! I don't write here anymore, but would like to come back, it's just I don't want my work copied and pasted. I hope you are doing well, my friend.

                  Now I have learned something thanks to you, dear friend. I will start looking for the red C. And I want YOU to come back on HP. Please? And are you still following me? Just listen to me ramble on. Thank you for your sweet compliment on my hubs.
                  I do the best I can to make my Cherished-followers happy.
                  As for my health, no, I won't lie. It is not going to be any better. Now on top of the Fibromyalgia, I have Thrombosclorosis, an incurable disease of my circulatory system. I have no circulation below my knees and my doctor said that in time this would work its way to my heart and I would get congestive heart failiure, but I am going to enjoy myself while I am here.

      I have had pieces of my hub article taken and used. This is copyright infringement, and violates copyright laws. The first step is to send an email warning of the infringement to the publisher of your text (you can find copyright infringement templates online). Make sure you include a copy of the copyright notice in PDF form with your verified signature in the email.
      
      In the email include the URL that the original text/article is on, the URL that you found it posted on by them and the exact text/article words.
      
      Also include your name mailing address, phone number and email address. A good template will have these fields already, and they are legally required for the notice to be valid.
      
      The other party usually is bright enough to remove the text/article following receipt of this email.
      
      PS - Make sure that you have the copyright symbol and your name enabled on your hubs!

         It is my understanding that the work is copyrighted even without the symbol. When you include the symbol, it lists your real name. I am writing under a pen name so I would rather not include the symbol.

            You are correct. According the the U.S. Copyright Office: "A copyright notice is an identifier placed on copies of the work to inform the world of copyright ownership. The copyright notice generally consists of the symbol or word “copyright (or copr.),” the name of the copyright owner, and the year of first publication, e.g., ©2008 John Doe. While use of a copyright notice was once required as a condition of copyright protection, it is now optional. Use of the notice is the responsibility of the copyright owner and does not require advance permission from, or registration with, the Copyright Office. See Circular 3, Copyright Notice, for requirements for works published before March 1, 1989, and for more information on the form and position of the copyright notice."

            According to the Copyright Office Melbourne: "By including a copyright statement, you alert people to the fact that your work is subject to copyright and they cannot just freely use it however they want.    Thanks liladybug. You make a good point about the message it sends by just having the © symbol there. Here's what I am thinking about doing. I am putting a text capsule at the end of each of my hubs in which I am typing my pen name with the copyright symbol and the year. That way I still have some anonymity but still it still looks official. What do you think?

      I think that's a great idea. It still will send the sign that it's copyrighted material for those that don't understand the laws.
      
      I had no idea how to create the © symbol - I would have probably would have copied and pasted it from somewhere. Thanks for the lesson!

      Rather than manually adding copyright notices, we recommend using the provided feature to add a copyright notice in a standard format for each Hub.
      Edit your Hub and click the "Display Options" box on the right side of the Hubtool.

         I was trying to avoid using my real name on the copyright notice since I am writing under a different name. Does that make sense?
         
         Also, will HP ever find a way to let people change their user name?
