Can Monotheism be blamed for the decline of Civilizations? In other words, one God as one Dictator rather that multiple Gods competing, thereby decentralizing the Religious Power Base?
Religion can be blamed for the progression of civilizations. Religion has always been an anchor regardless of how many gods are worshiped.
How is this anchor defined? Seems rather vague. The Gods of Ancient Greece offered stories of murder, rape and general mayhem. How does one explain the "Cradle of Western Civilization" (Ancient Greece) which flourished for 2500 years? They were "anchor-less" (I would argue) polytheists. These many Greek Gods were often at odds with each other. The Greeks were the first to explain the world in natural laws, not necessarily basing it upon the "anchor" of religion.
The gods of ancient Greece were based on Mesopotamian gods. Let me rephrase, the Christian religion has always been an anchor for progress for the last 2000. Need and example? The Dark Ages. Western civilization would be a 1,000 ahead if it wasn't controlled by the church. Need a more modern example? The deep south. Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama - the most religious states in the union. Dead last in education, innovative technology, human resources, economy. But top of the list in teen pregnancy, welfare recipients (per capita), poverty and child porn.
I agree. The Religion Anchor is a 'dead weight', not a tool to 'keep a civilization safe in a storm'. But I was more curious about the decentralization idea. If monotheism is the equivalent of a dictator in the 'spiritual realm', does polytheism's lack of control, of central spiritual authority, make it more probable for a civilization to flourish, absent an earthly dictator? Such as in giving Ancient Greece a chance.
(Now the tables are turned, hence Thomas Jefferson's 'separation of Church and State' philosophy. He knew about the incredible dangers of concentrated authority in the realm of the mystics of the mind, not just the mystics of the muscle. The latter worries led to a three part government here in the U.S.)

Viruses require a host organism to perform their biological processes. Ideas (memes) are similar. If you accept that ideas reproduce and evolve in their hosts' minds, then it seems that an idea with a monotheistic component might have some evolutionary advantages.

Who do you really want to run as the Republican candidate? I am a liberal, and I support Obama, so I think I would prefer Bachmann or Palin, or both. What about you?

My local paper this morning has an article on possible evidence of early American life. Seems that an archeologist by the name of David Jenkins previously found fossilized excrement with human proteins and/or DNA that dated to 14,000 years ago. He has lately uncovered bone fragments that...
