Opinions seem to be split on James Wan's 'Saw' series.
The question is what do you hubbers think of it?
Is it clever and well thought through?
or
Is it gory for the sake of being gory?
I must admit - I've only seen the first one and I thought it was fantastic - the story held together and was twisted in all the right ways to make you hate yourself for liking it.
What do you think?
I love the Saw series. I have seen the first 3 and they were great. I look forward to seeing more of them.
I think it is well thoughtout and gory to boot just the way a horror movie should be!
I rented the first " Saw " movie because I could not find anything else worth watching . I ended up sitting on the edge of my chair the whole time I watched it . The rest of the series was painfully predictable . And since the second one have not bothered . They have been plenty gory but they were missing the vital element that makes for a good horror movie , suspense . Gross out Is just gross out , but you throw suspense in there and then you have a legitimate horror movie !
They degrade pretty quickly for me. As with most things they turn into a series, the first one is brilliant. Can any single plot really support six separate films?
I did hate myself for liking it.
It was cruel and clever, stretching my brain and testing the edges of morality. It was brilliant.
The sequels? garbage.
I am looking towards a career in writing films (already had contact with Hammer House of Horror and Alternative Films) so I am trying to test all the elements in Horror Films which make you hate yourself for liking it. What made the first so good?
The setting is stark, and the plot is stark.
There is no way to get out of the room, and no chance that any help will come in. This creates a strong focus, because once you accept that you are IN that single room, there is no place for your thoughts to wander.
You lose that quiet little reassurance in the back of you mind, that somebody might bust in at the last moment and save the day... very very tense.
The reason I hated myself for liking it? Through the course of the movie, I tried SO HARD to let the story happen without taking a side myself. I couldn't stand the decision that had to be made, it was too horrible. I could not even accept that a person would be able to choose either option. But eventually, I got to that place where I could make such a decision... put a big ol' knot right in my stomach.
It was a stretch for my brain like I said. Right to the very edges.
The story is just too clever to have a good sequel. The psychological tension made it good, not the gore. That is a well you can't draw from twice
I think Saw movies can be described in an article "After a merger of mannequin and tomato ketchup factories, a recently sacked employee gets his revenge"...
Sorry guys...
