Are youtube videos copyrighted?

   I have heard you can't use images from google etc, is using youtube video risky too?

      When you post a Youtube video in a HubPages capsule, it's actually a link back to the original, so you 're not actually copying anything.  You're embedding it.  So you're OK.

      check the URL on the box, if they don't want it embedded anywhere else, it will say. major labels won't allow embedding on another site, even on your own channel if you have one.

   ah right fair enough, Ive been using flickr now, just found it easier to get photos for a particular hub Im writing there than anywhere else anyway. I noticed on one guys hub that he's putting flickr under his photos, do you have to do this?

      No need to credit the youtube user whose video you're using. It's linked back to the original page, so if someone clicks on it, they can visit it.
      
      If there is a copyright issue (for instance the person who uploaded it doesn't own it or have the rights to broadcast it) then the copyright owner takes it up with Youtube, not you. It'll be removed and it won't be seen on your hub. Good news is that if that happens then you'll see it in your broken links report.

      No, you don't have to do that.  The only requirement is that you credit the photographer. 
      
      You can do that two ways - you can just mention his/her name and photostream URL in the caption, or you can put a hyperlink in your Hub.
      
      I always do the hyperlink thing - it means they get a backlink, and it seems to me that's the least I can do to thank them for the photo.  I put it at the end of the Hub ("thanks to .... for the photo of ...). 
      
      I'm assuming you're using the Advanced Search and only using Creative commons items.

   I think as long as you accredit it to the person its ok also... check to see if they have the cc( creative commons ) licesce on their channel just to make sure or look for a copyright on the persons channel itself .. not just on regular homepage player... thats where i notice most of the ones i've seen were on the channel

   For the record, while many people take photos off the internet, Flickr etc, doing so is copyright infringement.
   
   Even if you link to the owners website, they can ask you to take it down, and file for copyright infringement if you don't, and god forbid if you mad emoney from the picture, then they can sue.
   
   Taking a picture withou owners consent is copyright theft, just as if someone came on to your website and stole all your text.
   
   I wont say i'm innocent of the crime, but you have to be aware that one day you maay get an e-mail from someone asking you to remove the offending photo!
   
   When it comes to Youtube you are fine to use the Embed code, I am not sure if the users give up any rights in their TOS!

      Oli, Richard's question arises because he knows that already. All photos on Flickr have a licence - obviously you can't use those labelled "all rights reserved", but there are large numbers of photos which are Creative Commons licensed, and Flickr provides an Advanced Search so you can easily find them.  So there's really no excuse for using the copyrighted images.

   When I search for images on Google, I use Advanced Search and limit results to images "labelled for commercial reuse". When I use these images, I also acknowledge the creator of the image and provide a link back to their profile where possible. I'm assuming this covers me on all counts. Yes? No?

      No it doesn't.  Google doesn't warrant that their search is accurate.  They clearly state it's up to you to check whether the image is copyright or not. 
      
      I've tried that search and often find there's nothing on the site itself to suggest the image isn't copyright (just to emphasise, all images are copyright unless there's a specific statement or licence on the site saying otherwise).

   YouTube's Terms of Service states "you may not use the YouTube Embeddable Player for the primary purpose of gaining advertising or subscription revenue."  I'm thinking that means that since we gain advertising revenue from our hubs, we really need to ask for permission to embed videos.

      That would technically be correct, I don't think it is ever really going to cause problems though, lets face it there are thousands of sites out there making money by listing Youtube videos. 
      
      I think that amendment to the contract would be after thousands of sites sprung up which basically leached millions of YouTube videos and embedded them on to their website, in the millions, in an attempt to gain traffic.
      
      I do know that Youtube has been cracking down on this type of misuse, and it is on a much larger scale than what we would do on Hubpages.
