I am the first one to admit that I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but I discovered a group that simply amazes me. Their music makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me smile, and fills me with hope all at the same time. Right now, I'm trying to get an interview with them, but I wanted to share one of their songs' lyrics and ask you what you honestly think. I guess it's kind of an experiment. It's called "Stand Up" and it's from their second album.

I know its cliché to say everyday be positive,
Life’s’ filled with obstacles and broken promises,
When the sun don’t shine your battling time,
On the search to find answers that you never find,
Sometimes... you feel like giving up,
Throw your hands to the sky cos’ you’re so fed up,
Sometimes... you truly lose your hope
Trying to find an escape so you drink and smoke
Then the next day comes and it doesn’t get better
Our generations lost, n we needa’ go get her
so many of us got folks that don't get us
it's not the same as it was, their mentality's stuck
in their old ways, but it's not the same

In the past 20 years things have really changed,
We’ve lost our sense of hope n lost our sense of pride
I wanna change the way I think, at least I’m going to try.

Stand up for what you believe in, don’t be afraid [Don’t you be afraid]
It ain't easy, to have hope when you’re always broke
But you know you’ve gotta keep, keeping on just the same
    My baby...

It’s a hope a sense of air the breeze around the world,
Tryin' to latch on to somethin’ like riches and pearls,
Tryin’ to find a sense of purpose in material things,
Distracted from yourself when your cell phone rings,
    Hey
I understand how it feels, how life can be so hard to deal with,
    Hey,
I’ve been down that road, searching for direction with no path to follow,
You can’t just go to college and get a degree,
Fo’ sure it’d make enough to support your family
We’re an angry generation littered by the situation
Weapons too accessible to take out of frustration
    With violence involved, guns resolve
Minor disputes in school bathroom stalls
I’m not sure how to process all the thoughts I have
I know times are tough but it’s not all bad
    Come on

Stand up for what you believe in [You’ve gotta believe], don’t be afraid [Don’t you be afraid]
It ain't easy, to have hope when you’re always broke
But you know you’ve gotta keep, keeping on just the same
    My baby...

    It’s up to us y'all
    Our generation is way too complacent;
We have a war going on,
And so many of us are not free
Its time for us to make a stand
    And come together
N don’t just talk revolution, act revolution,
    Stand up, come on.

Stand up for what you believe in, don’t be afraid [Don’t you be afraid]
    It ain't easy
[It might not be easy baby],
To have hope when you’re always broke
[But you gotta have some hope]
But you know you’ve gotta keep, keeping on just the same
    My baby...

Stand up for what you believe in, don’t be afraid [Don’t you be afraid]
It ain't easy, to have hope when you’re always broke
But you know you’ve gotta keep, keeping on just the same
    My baby...

Stand up for something, no matter what it is,
    What you’re unhappy with
    Change your path,
    Change your life,
    Yeah,
    We deserve equality, come on.

This group is called God-Des & She. They're a lesbian group from the midwest, who are now living in New York. They came out as a group in 2000, but they began getting a bigger following when they were featured on The L Word.

Now comes for the second part of the experiment. Does the fact that this song is written by a lesbian group who speaks for homosexual equality change your opinion of the song? Even if you're a conservative Christian, doesn't this song still speak to you? Doesn't it make you want to stand up for what you believe in? Doesn't it make you think twice about how you treat other people and what's going on in the world today?

After listening to this song, I really like it, and yes it made me want to stand up for what I believe in. But at my age, it doesn't matter to me if someone is gay, straight, or bi. It's their life! I like music, not wondering what they are doing and with who, just listening.
In general I personally don't like rap, but I like this, for whatever it's worth.

Thanks, Faybe. You know, when I first discovered this song, it gave me hope. Then I had to find out who it was by. When I learned more about God-des & She, it just made me love their music even more. It's rare for music to actually mean anything anymore and those women are very inspirational.

That is so funny. I have to tell you now where I found inspiration. When you listen to the words, though, I think you'll get me. My daughter was pregnant, and it wasn't planned. Worse was she had just broken up with the father. She didn't know what to do. She wanted the baby more than anything, but was unsure if it was best for her child. Everyone was telling her not to keep it, she wasn't ready, adoption, anything but telling him now. I heard this song, and prayed it would come on the radio when she was in the car. It Did!
I said this is my song for you, and turned it up. Turns out it was just what she needed to hear, and she listened. Now I have a two year old granddaughter, and she is lovely, and my daughter has never been happier in her life. Sure there's bills and stress, but then she looks at that little girl, and it's okay.

It's amazing where inspiration can come from.

Right! I mean, my daughter is a head banger, big on Ozzie Osborn! No Hannah Montana! Yet it was what she needed to hear, that day. She would not even admit it unless pressed. It's not her style. But she needed to know that I thought she'd be fine, that I knew she was a diamond. You are too, Pani. Don't let anyone tell you that you're not strong enough, that's all. K? big_smile
