Whats there to argue?
I expect this to be a very short thread!
Each person's reality is shaped by past experiences.
Thank you for this contribution, Diane.
So far we have these answers to What is Reality:
past experiences are reality
nature is reality
the consensus reality is reality
my personal reality is reality
illusion is reality
truth is reality
(The last two taken from codemfoda's quote listed in his Hub about Albert Einstein: * Truth is only an illusion, but they are fixed.")
"In my Father's house are many mansions:" This is an interesting statement, because of the layers of reality to be experienced via meditation. I have been an adept for 15 years, a short time comparatively with masters. But when you experience metaphysical phenomena and also feel tangibly that which is termed subtle bodies, you have no choice but to question reality. The standpoint of reality is from a physical existence, The forces that influence us individually become a tangible experience once you go into these subtle layers and become mindful of all experiences within, and then without the physical body.
Having had quite a few metaphysical experiences I'm inclined to turn Descartes quote "I think therefore I am" into I am, therefore I think. This turns reality into a different ballgame.
I've spent many years mapping consciousness, more from an experiential standpoint and not a rational intellectual one. The later restricts experiences and can impede the expansion of reality.
People are only ready to expand their reality when their existing one becomes too limiting, boring or life threatening! So most people are not ready
- maybe mansions refers to chakras and levels of consciousness.
The higher the level of consciousness, the more the realization of reality.
Reality is definitely more than what the human senses detect. I believe, to detect more, one must meditate.
As a meditator, are you ready for reality? Detecting reality takes concentration and self-discipline.
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few,"* for this reason. Its not easy. Its easier to go along with consensus reality.
*Matthew 9:37
Definitely a hard road - and one less travelled - excuse the pun. And those levels of consciousness are as much above as they are below - as in the Emerald Tablet.
I feel blessed to have been able to mix meditation spaces and map them in conjunction with others initiates. It's a difficult task, full of discernment. and an ongoing task at that. I've written a hub, years ago on Consciousness, Thoughts and the Brain which was part of the mapping process, or vision of experiences.
Unravelling conditioning has so far been the most difficult, sourcing and defusing samskaras (scars of the mind) and then embodying the Higher Self - and attempting to stabilize it. But it is worth the effort.
I have heard that we are at the lower end of the higher ages. This a very calming thought.
If one is 300 years ahead of their time, say, they can relax, meditate and advance on an individual level in relative leisure. (I am presuming they have less karma to work out.)
What is amazing is that the Bible says we can go home in the blink of an eye!
Where O Death is Your Victory?
…51Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15:52
What is "The Emerald Tablet?"
"The Emerald Tablet, also known as the Smaragdine Table, or Tabula Smaragdina, is a compact and cryptic piece of Hermetica reputed to contain the secret of the prima materia and its transmutation." W
What is "prima materia and its transmutation?"
"Prima materia, materia prima or first matter, is the ubiquitous starting material required for the alchemical magnum opus and the creation of the philosopher's stone. It is the primitive formless base of all matter similar to chaos, the quintessence, or aether. Esoteric alchemists describe the prima materia using simile, and compare it to concepts like the anima mundi." W
What is "anima mundi:"
The world soul (Greek: ψυχὴ κόσμου, Latin: anima mundi) is, according to several systems of thought, an intrinsic connection between all living things on the planet, which relates to our world in much the same way as the soul is connected to the human body. The idea originated with Plato and was an important component of most Neoplatonic systems:" W
"And those levels of consciousness are as much above as they are below…" Can you explain, Jewels?
I study Planetary Forces and align it with the Greek definition of Soul. It is a fascinating topic. The soul is the influence of forces that influence the human condition. One must overcome the negative influences and ride toward the positives, thereby transforming the Soul. In the Hindu tradition this is a transformed Astral Body.
Both Planetary Forces and the hymn of The Emerald Tablet (which comes from the Hermetic tradition) are used in Inner Alchemy. As above, so below refers to the incarnation of the Higher Self into matter, into the physical body. So it is a transformation or revealing of the higher self in the lower complex. This is in essence the discovery of the philosophers stone - it is within. "The Kingdom of Heaven is within"
There are several versions of the Emerald Tablet, all of which lead to the same meaning. It is one poem I can recite - not often enough.
The expansion of consciousness in the context of the Emerald Tablet is the ultimate task.
Interestingly the zodiac, in Greek literature means zoo, hence a connection to the 'animal' nature we reside in.
Oh... well, I am crabby. (or turtley)
Inner Alchemy
"Neidan, or internal alchemy (simplified Chinese: 內丹术; traditional Chinese: 內丹術; pinyin: nèidān shù), is an array of esoteric doctrines and physical, mental, and spiritual practices that Taoist initiates use to prolong life and create an immortal spiritual body that would survive after death. Also known as Jindan ("golden elixir"), inner alchemy combines theories derived from external alchemy (waidan), correlative cosmology (including the Five Phases), the emblems of the Yijing, and medical theory, with techniques of Daoist meditation, daoyin gymnastics, and sexual hygiene."
Philosophers Stone:
" The philosophers' stone or stone of the philosophers (Latin: lapis philosophorum) is a legendary alchemical substance said to be capable of turning base metals such as lead into gold (chrysopoeia, from the Greek χρυσός khrusos, "gold," and ποιεῖν poiēin, "to make") or silver. It was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality; for many centuries, it was the most sought-after goal in alchemy. The philosophers' stone was the central symbol of the mystical terminology of alchemy, symbolizing perfection at its finest, enlightenment, and heavenly bliss. Efforts to discover the philosophers' stone were known as the Magnum Opus ("Great Work")."
Very interesting, to say the least! Thanks, Jewels!
PS I think the goal of life is to become awake enough in the body to be awake after loosing the body. How would you explain this goal in esoteric language? Is this a possibility?
Someone just mentioned that the astral plane is also illusion! The astral plane is place to rest. Ultimate reality has nothing whatsoever to do with ego.
Sigh.
The lower Astral plane is full of deceptions and requires enormous discernment to navigate through. Hence the need for an expansion of consciousness. There is Ego (higher self) and ego (lower case) which is the falleness of humankind. This is full of illusion and deception. But without the Ego we are not animated as humans. Hence a transformed Astral Body sees the higher elements of our Selves - Ego (capital E). This state of being is extraordinary and worth pursuing. In the Hindu teachings Ego is the equivalent to Atman - it is an unfallen state of Astrality.
A spiritual adept is one who retains consciousness in sleep. And sleep is twofold, either non-aware generally, and also sleep as in what we do when we go to bed at night. Astral travelling is the ability to retain consciousness and traverse spaces while allowing the physical body to rest.
The reason why adepts use Astral Travelling as 'sport' in spiritual seeking is so that when death comes, they have an awareness in the death space, or afterlife.. This is the retention of consciousness permanently without the physical and it is a discipline.
The world is wonderfully becoming..... forever in a state of expansion as are we. Our thoughts are things... they create. We come to this time space reality to explore contrast and participate therein by our thoughts. As soon as we see something we do not want... our thoughts then create in vibrations that which we do want. Our task in the process is to get into alignment with that which we DO want. It is already created in vibrations simply because of our choice and our connection to source energy.
Trouble is - we remain focused on that which we do not want and thus slow the process down in creating that which we do want. What ever we focus on - give our attention to - becomes the experience we have in this life.
Good news is - that which we do want remains in tact in vibrations and those coming after us often bring with them alignment to that which we want.
Source gives us that which we focus on. The minute is already old news. Tune your frequency to the radio station playing that which you do want and learn to be joy filled. My hubs expand on this.... one I recommend is 9 differences between the rich and the poor - study all the links I posted to the thread before judgement.
Oh - one more thing.
Stress - proper applied becomes focus
Focus - properly applied becomes alignment
Alignment - properly applied becomes the ineffable
Wow!
to both of these posts! Thanks for joining in, Jewels and Neil!!
If they help no one else... they help me!
But, I am sure they contribute to the enlightenment of all who have the ears to hear… well, eyes to see.
To focus on the source of all life with your whole body (and the strength of ALL the chakras) mind, heart and soul… that is a FOCUS for you!
I guess we are pretty much done saving the world here.
"Alignment - properly applied becomes the ineffable."
Ineffable: "Too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words." D
:-) - I will watch for your comment on the hub mentioned - goes into more detail... no need to type it here when it is already there - I type slow LOL
"My hubs expand on this.... one I recommend is 9 differences between the rich and the poor - study all the links I posted to the thread before judgement."
Will do.
I read your Hub, Neil Sperling. Vey amazing article. I have not watched the links yet. I will comment there after I do. Still contemplating what you wrote. ( Neil wrote: "one I recommend is 9 differences between the rich and the poor - study all the links I posted to the thread before judgement.")
I used to think that India was a basically non-materialistic country: most people meditating and living lives devoted to Brahman ("the ultimate reality underlying all phenomena.") Well, while wandering along Venice beach near Marina del Rey, this weekend, I started up a conversation with a father who was watching a large group of children swimming in the ocean with their school group. Also watching the kids was a multitude of six-figure parents. So, I was talking to this Dad, one of the group, who explained he was originally from India. He told me his father owns a couple of restaurants nearby called Akbar. His father had come to California in '76 with three hundred dollars. In four years he was able to open up his own restaurant and the rest is history!
In first place, that is amazing.
In the second place, could that happen today?
In the third place, he told me something interesting: India is as materialistic as any other country and all people are materialistic!
Yes, survival does depend on focusing on worldly matters.
In contemplating Neil's article, I have been thinking: What if one does not want to network and focus so strongly on material matters. After all, Jesus said heaven is within… and in my Fathers house are many mansions.
It stands to reason that focusing so much on material wealth is a little futile since in the end we merely die and our possessions and money are no longer accessible.
I think... I really think, that having just enough is good enough. Not all of us are required to tap into God's abundance. (In fact, I have heard, that to become a millionaire, one must have developed this type of karma throughout previous lifetimes.)
So, in conclusion, huge wealth is really not for everybody. I would rather have free time over the headaches of having to manage large amounts of money. We should make enough to be successful and comfortable. And yes, Abundance can be tapped into by anyone, but one must know how much Abundance one can handle.
BTW Marina del Rey is a very upscale local populated with the very wealthy. The beaches are quiet. Few rowdy kids. Venice is not like it was in in the 60s/70s, thats for sure. There was a sign on the boardwalk nearby stipulating:
"No fires, No dogs, No bikes, No skateboards, No rollerblades." It might as well have added, "No fun."
Well, you'll have fun anyway... if you have a boogie board, surf board or a boat!

I'd have to say that the world is ready for reality, along with the animals that inhabit it. All but humans; a great many of them seem to prefer to live in their imagination, pretending it to be real in spite of knowing better or putting out the effort to find out what is real.
How do you make the effort to FIND what is real?
It takes effort to CREATE illusion too.
...to search for reality is important, I would say.
But how do you you FIND? what process?
where? what? how?
How do you know that what you are finding is not just other people's illusions they have created?
Is nature the only ultimate reality?
"How do you make the effort to FIND what is real?"
Does it match nature? If so, it is almost certainly real.
"Is nature the only ultimate reality?"
There is zero reason to think otherwise. For the nonce, then, yes it is.
For me, I prefer illusion over reality. I prefer that which I can create. I hate conforming to the reality of the world. But of course, we have to conform. That is an interesting term: consensus reality. Did you make it up?
No, I didn't make up that term. I use it a lot though, to differentiate my reality form the "normal" shared reality of most people.
- is a "normal/typical reality" as real as "your reality?"
My reality SEEMS more real. The universe seems interactive and alive.
But I have to go by what I can objectively prove. But I keep trying all the time. People mostly ignore my arguments though, even when I have a good argument, that makes sense.
Everything real stems from nature.
Can that statement be argued?
Are people ready to interact with nature scientifically?
I dare not say it. the word I am thinking of starts with S. maybe the word energy would suffice.
Why not? No one really knows what energy is anyway. It's the obvious animator of the universe.
That, or gravity. Of the two, I'd prefer gravity as it is the ultimate producer of energy (making stars, you know).
I think of gravity as the result of the geometry of space. What animates the universe, though, is energy.
I would have said that gravity creates the geometry of space, not the other way around.
Yep - perhaps the actual one rather than being man-made.
Don't worry. I will never mention it again.
hydrogen churning into helium. the first Adam and Eve.
oops
Yep. And then their children, lithium, beryllium, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and all the rest. And as they fail to properly clothe themselves, they are kicked out in a super-nova!
(There is an exception here, but I will not mention it. I will never mention it again on HP forums.)
What is reality?
We are born.
We live our lives.
We die.
What happens in between birth and death is the most important thing.
Hopefully we learn from our mistakes, share them, and we are able to leave a legacy
behind that will inspire others.
The world around me, the one I live inn is actually real in total reality. We do exist physically, materially and as long as we are in the body , reality doesn't go away.
Now, if 'The World is not ready for Reality' that world must not be existing objectively; as if what you read here isn't written and a person behind these words doesn't exist...
However I AM here...
<"We do exist physically, materially and as long as we are in the body… reality doesn't go away. ">
What about when we are not in the body?
Does reality go away?
As we cannot be outside our body, it must be the case that reality "goes away" when we make that claim. Yes?
Kathryn, the spiritual "reality" isn't revealed to me so that I can answer your question. The closest information about the other 'reality' one can read in 2.Corinthians 4:3.4., yet in very limited description for the mortals on this side of spiritual eternity. Since the apostle speaking of his experience as of third person, "he heard things that can't be expressed in words, things that humans cannot put into words. I don't know whether this happened to him physically or spiritually Only God knows", - I can't answer now while living in the body what the glorious " reality " is in the spirit the real world.
I SEE!!!! This reveals a lot about about you! I would say, you are actually in league with the atheists, in that you are being very honest. (A good thing.) I would say you also have "faith" in an afterlife, since you claim to be a theist.
No?
John 14:2
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."
John 13:36
Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
Ooops these quotes include the L word and the F word… but not the G word. I must give myself that leeway in order to back up my original idea which goes something like this:
People do not seem to be ready/willing/able to realize the driving force of ourselves and this world.
The driving force of ourselves and this world must be acknowledged in order for us to get anywhere, as far as alleviating the suffering of ourselves/mankind.
TWISI
The driving force has designed us according to the laws of nature.
I believe, first, we must acknowledge there is a driving force which operates according to natural processes and laws.
Second, we must understand how to cooperate with that force to our own advantage.
Until/unless we acknowledge that force, communicate with that force and cooperate with that force, we are left in the dust of the earth.
And it is our own faults.
TWISI
Entropy is death. What is the opposite of entropy? Whatever that is, is life. That is the driving force.
Elan Vital
I wish I had a materialist term to define life, but there doesn't seem to be one.
Rupert Sheldrake proposes "morphic fields" to explain life and order and complexity in the universe. Kind of like a magnetic field provides order to iron filings.
I like the idea.
"Alfred Rupert Sheldrake is an English author, public speaker, and researcher in the field of parapsychology, known for his "morphic resonance" concept. He worked as a biochemist and cell biologist at Cambridge University from 1967 to 1973 and as principal plant physiologist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics until 1978." D
Interesting.
Atman: "The spiritual life principle of the universe, esp. when regarded as inherent in the real self of the individual."
Its funny you use the word ego. Here, it's a pretty much a bad word.
However, ego merely indicates a sense of self.
ego = self = god.
Ego = Self = God.
It certainly has negative connotations because in new age circles particularly it's tainted as a negative. But the Self - Ego (capital E), is a completely different concept to the fallen ego. I often use Higher Self in its place, depending on the audience.
If we were ready for reality we…
would be happy to give up the trivial pursuits of illusionary life.
which include all the lower chakra based activities.
The higher chakras indicate interest in the higher Self to a greater and greater degree.
some say "self" is a bad word!!!!
True-Self realization leads to heaven within.
The way I see it.
Do you? Thank you so much for your words of metaphysical wisdom.
Sadly, "metaphysical" is another bad word around here.
I understand re the bad press for metaphysical discourse. For many years when I first joined Hubpages it was rare to have an intelligent and informative discussion on the topic, especially at this level.
To your statement about the higher chakras - I'm more inclined to embody them all with consciousness thereby ensuring a higher level of transformation. The lower chakras get bad press because there is a massive depth of intensity, often difficult to hold. This intensity can send people off the rails, into more passionate and volatile experiences.
However, to bring light into the darkness, ie the lower chakras, leads to hugely fulfilling life experience. Another way of seeing this is to be more grounded - as above so below - bringing more of your higher self into the physical human arena requires strength in the lower chakras, more awareness. Too many people live from the waist upward and have no awareness of the lower complex. And this lack of awareness is cheating us of many treasures, It is also leading to ignorance of our self-healing abilities.
I see that a disregard for our lower chakras leads to half a human being instead of a whole one. The danger here though is that we come across the power we possess, and as Emmerson says ' Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." So integrity above and below is required.
And a paradox - the Higher you go, the lower you go - at least that's is my experience because I don't ignore the lower complex.
I hit the wrong button to comment - so my post is not following time line - it's above

What is reality? That is, what makes something real? For example: Is sound real to a deaf man? Are colors real to a blind man? Is the imaginary friend of a child any less real than God to a Catholic?
