When we upload photos, a upload indicator starts rotating. It actually means nothing. Even when the internet connection is disconnected it goes on rotating. If a file-wise progress indicator could be placed in place of this, it would be helpful for the user especially who are using a slower connection.
I know that people who are using a fast connection of internet will not understand the problem. I have a broadband connection of 256 mbps (it is only the rating but actually it is much slower that that), and when I try to upload a batch of photos whose total size is 10 MB (not even 40 MB which is the limit at hubpages), it takes 25 to 30 minutes and sometimes it stops working without giving any indication.
sounds reasonable for pple with slower connections wondering if the process is still runnuing or failed.. i've heard others say they wait up to 5 or 10 min. unknowing of whats happening or if frozen.. i personally have a mega fast connection so I know right away if the logos still spinning and I dont ge an update within twenty seconds then it probably froze. . That would be helpful to ppl with slower connections
its actually a very plausible idea bcuz even a fast connection cannot always be sure if the process has failed. I only can base the failed status by knowing my usual download time.. so if a fast connection cannot be aware of the freeze then I can see where this would majorly render a user with a slow connection with complete unawareness and left to hope the process finishes!
How big are the images you are uploading?
I would suggest that you use a utility like (graphic converter on the Mac) to resize the files. For a site like hubpages where these images are not full screen you don't need files bigger than a few hundred K at the most.
It would depend on whether you are just putting a half column wide picture at the top of a hub or are trying to do a large slide show. The half column could probably be between 50 to 100k, a large slide show might want images twice that size.
To avoid having your photo re-sized, a full column width photo should be 520 pixels wide. A half-column size: 260 pixels, and 1/4 column: 130 (I believe). Have a look at this hub:
http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-put-pict … ge-quality
It's better to start with larger photos and/or higher resolutions. With any photo-editing software, you can scale down a photo to (for example) 520x350 pixels and 72 dpi. This is "good enough" for small photos on a website. This would produce a file size of about 45kb, and shouldn't take more than a few seconds to upload on a broadband connection.
Having said that, I had trouble uploading earlier. I suspect it was because of heavy traffic on the Hubpages server. I went back later to try the upload again..no problem.
You're right though, a progress bar would be more helpful than a spinning icon.

I found a couple of great hubs on site maps, and I generated one. Searched hubs, FAQs and forum for how to upload it here. A three-year old hub says it isn't possible. How about now, with the subdomains? I wanted to add a sitemap in Google webmaster tools. Thanks!
