Is it possible to obtain a job after filing bankruptcy?  How have the laws changed in the United States?

    Here is how it works:

The more you need the job (i.e. the lower your credit score), the less inclined they are to give it to you.

It really depends on the job you need.

If you are seeking employment in a large corporation or in an executive position with a private company, then, Yes, you may have quite some difficulties landing a job offer.

Otherwise, do not worry too mich abot it.

If you have filed for bankrutcy, the banks or any financial system will not hire you.  It is almost as they they think you are dishonest because you have had past financial problems.

it's a vicious cycle; you need money, employers are hesitant due to low credit score;you don't get hired. Your score drops even more.
the credit score requirement has to be eliminated from job applications. Unless it's financially connected to the job, what's the point..

the entire point of the credit score requirement is to eliminate applicants in a legal discriminatory manner. hmm

Based on the Bankruptcy Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act, it is illegal for an employer not to hire you based on a past bankruptcy. However, many companies do pull a credit report in the later stages of the hiring process, and may use the information found there as part of their final decision.

Credit should not have anything to do with employment. In this economy a majority of Americans who had great credit, now have poor credit. Many of them also need jobs, so pulling credit to me at this point in our Country is ludicrous. sad

Unfortunately, certain industries will not hire you with a discharged bankruptcy on your credit history. Generally, financial institutions in particular will not hire you.  That is very unfortunate as having a bankruptcy on your credit history does NOT imply you will not be a great employee! However, most industries will not bar you from employment with a bankruptcy on your credit report. Do not be discouraged! There is definitely life after bankruptcy.
